at the beach
If your kids have done this, how much time did they spend on it per day approximately? Just trying to get an idea of what this might involve if we use this. Thanks! :001_smile:
Georgia On My Mind
We did Apologia Biology last year. We followed the two week schedule suggested by the author of the textbook. My dgd read the material and completed the "On Your Own" questions on the day assigned (about 1/2-3/4 hr or less) and the next day we discussed what was covered for about 20 minutes. All labs for that week were done on Wednesday at one time (approximately 1-2hrs some but not all weeks). Testing was done the last day of the two week module schedule. My dgd is very independent with her work. We plan together and she usually sticks with our schedule unless something disrupts our routine (sickness, unexpected guests, field trip, etc.). Most things we were able to schedule around or double up to keep on the two week module schedule. I hope this is helpful. It sounds manageable from what you are saying. That's what I am hoping. I don't want science for next year to take two hours a day, or frankly, even an hour and a half every day, though I understand that experiment days would be an exception. Anyone else? LatinTea
http://corefoundations.wordpress.com/scheds-math-science/ You might want to look at this wonderful, detailed schedule to give you an idea of what is involved for each day's reading, experiments, and the like. Then you could look through the book and see how much time your student might need to make it work.
Angel
My dd used the MFW schedule for Biology last year. They have the student working 4 days a week on Biology. We chose this plan because we have all day co-op twice a month and this fit better in our schedule. She averaged 30-45 minutes per day, a little longer on the study guide questions at the end of the book. That was without experiments. It would have taken her MUCH longer to work out the experiments. She read through them all, but she is getting science lab at co-op so we didn't physically do any of those at home. I don't know if you have it in hand yet, but the Biology text is filled with a huge number of vocab words per chapter. It was crazy. Dd did quite a few open book tests in the Biology book, the amount of information given in each chapter was sometimes overwhelming.
mjbucks1
My ds has started biology this summer. He spends about 1/2 hour to 45 min for readings, but on the day he has to complete experiments it is obviously longer. Also, when doing the end of chapter review, this takes a little longer. We are also using the DVD that Apologis sells which is a recording of the live classes that Steve Rosenoff does through Red Wagon Tutorials. I LOVE the DVDs, and so does ds, but each lecture is 1 1/2 hours (for a total of 3 hours per module). There is a lot of vocabulary, but ds does not seem to have a problem with that. If you go to www.donnayoung.org she has a free schedule for Apologia Biology with bookmarks for each chapter which have all the vocabulary for each module on them. This is helpful to have all the vocabulary in one place. My ds is really enjoying the course :)
May
I purchased the schedule from Sonlight and dd followed that. She's spend about an hour a day.
at the beach
Thanks, everyone! I appreciate it. It sounds like this might be a good way to go. I'm also looking at Kolbe, which appears much more intense. Not sure if I want that for her for 8th. I think I'll start a new thread to see if anyone has any insights on the Kolbe course.
