NVLD and Math

Recommended Posts

Hoping for some advice here. My dd is in 6th grade, and we've always used Saxon math. She's done pretty well up until now, although she does need more help with her assignments than my other two children. She is really starting to struggle with Saxon 8/7-word problems, graphing, converting units of measurement, working with angles, and other things. She has always scored in the upper 25% in tests like the Stanford or the ITBS, but her score was a little lower last year, and I suspect that it will go down again this year.

A neuropsych we were seeing said that her problems with math stem from the fact that she can't visualize the steps in more advanced math.

Has anyone else gone through this? Should I try switching to another math program, like MUS, that might help her with this? What other math programs might we investigate?

Thanks.

Caroline

My understanding of NVLD and math is that highly verbal approaches work best. There was a woman with NVLD on the LDonline forums (obviously highly intelligent) and she said the only reason she was able to become proficient in math was because she had an extremely patient tutor who allowed her to ask questions about every little detail in math. She worked her way through math by talking about it in multiple ways.

Visualization tends to be a weakness with NVLD, but rote memory tends to be a strength. It might help for your dd to develop verbal rote steps for each type of problem.

NVLD usually involves difficulty with visual-spatial relationships, so manipulatives tend not to be particularly useful.
