Cheri Warren
My 10th grader got to see Notgrass and she wants to use Sonlight. I agree with her and think it's the "books". Yes, the books that Sonlight uses which seems to make history come alive. So now about English. Those of you who use Sonlight do you use the writing portions or do you add anythig to it? As far as lit analysis, I don't think with all the Sonlight reading we will be able to add anything else in such as LLATL gold or Lightning lit. Will that be okay? Does SL have ANY lit analysis as far as basic terms taught etc..? Our plan is to do Core 7, 100 and then 300 with a govt course thrown in! Thanks! mompotter
It is the books! :D I will be using core 7 next year so I don't have experience with the higher levels yet. I will be using IEW and Analytical Grammar with my 7th grader. You should ask on the SL forum. There are a ton of people that could answer your questions. :D

I was thinking of adding in Wordsmith Craftsman. Are you going to be doing the SL writing with IEW? Are you adding in any other lit analysis or just SL books? Kindred Hearts
I believe Lang. Arts is integrated in the SL IG (Core 7 & up). Edited July 18, 2010 by Kindred Hearts to clarify

I may be over-stepping, but just FYI before you purchase Core 7...I used Core 6 last year with my 6th and 8th graders. The spine text (SOTW) was way too elementary for my dc. mjbucks1
Cheri, I used Core 7 this past year with my 4th grade dd and 7th grade ds. While I think that the spine (SOTW Middle Ages and SOTW Modern times) is more advanced than the first two in the series, I definately do not feel they are quite meaty enough for high school. However, Core 7 also uses the Foster books (George Washington's World and Abraham Lincoln's World) which go much more in depth, but again are middle school level books. The literature is wonderful for middle school, but again I don't feel it is high school level (except for Great Expectations). The writing assignments are integrated, and wold be quite approprite for high school IMO (there is a great deal of literary analysis). I LOVE SL core 6 and 7, but if I were to use it for high school, I would add a high school text and some high school literture to the mix. Just my 2 cents :)

Are you going to be doing the SL writing with IEW? Are you adding in any other lit analysis or just SL books? The LA is integrated into core 7 and above but IEW really worked for us last year and I think we need to stick with what is working. I won't do the writing assignments from core 7 unless I think it will work with IEW. I am not adding in any other lit analysis. Before you have forum access you can ask questions in the choosing forum. You won't get as much feedback as you would in the core levels but it might help you.
