Right start math?

We are in the process of evaluating our ds age 6 for learning differences (I prefer that term to learning disablity). So far it seems like he has some auditory processing issues and possibly a bit of an issue with visual perception. He does have mild sensory integration dysfunction.

 

Basically he has a very hard time with rote memorization. Despite much working together, he still can't count past 13. I've heard that Right Start Math is very good for kids who have problems with counting since they de-emphasize counting.

 

So, I'm looking for advice. Right start isn't cheap, not that I don't mind spending the money, I just don't want to spend it if I don't have to.

Your son sounds very similar to mine except for the rote memorization part. We did some testing with a neuropsychologist. She told us to wait on more intensive CAPD testing because of my son's age (this is my younger son).

 

I think that I would see if I could find a used copy of RightStart to try. It holds its value WELL so you wont' be able to find it very cheap but cheaper than new.

 

We used RightStart with my older and younger son. Eventually I had to change him out of RightStart (this year) when we got to subtraction (that is in Level C). I think doing Level B with your son would be WELL worth the money and the try.

I would recommend Rightstart. Join the yahoo group and get the emails to you (there tends to be a lot of them sometimes) and there is people selling all the levels for great prices. Also you can post a message of a want to buy the certain levels there and if someone has it for sale then you can get it that way to.
