Martha in GA
I'm planning to use an umbrella school for my dd next year. It requires at least 3 tests per course and a comprehensive proctored final. I'm especially stumped about English. I really don't want to have to create tests, but many of the literature and composition courses don't come with tests -- especially those aimed at the homeschool market. I think I would like to use Windows to the World for Literature, and maybe some of the MCT books for composition (or Lost Tools of Writing, or Lively Art of Writing, or maybe an on-line class...). But I keep thinking BJU would be easier because it already includes tests. What would you do? Would BJU be a good, solid choice? I feel like I'm running in circles. Any words of advice or wisdom? LibrarianMom
Use essay exams and short answer questions on the literature you read. That would test for comprehension/analysis skills as well as allow you to grade on grammar and punctuation. For a comprehensive exam, you could do some comparison and contrast questions over several of the pieces you read comparing theme or character development. Mad Jenny Flint
We did essay tests (one question each) for English and Rhetoric, to check the little box that a test was administered.
