What to do if you finish early...

Recommended Posts

I am not saying I will, but what happens if I finish Junior year early? I know I can move on, but I know I won't be able to get the curriculum by then. I'd have to wait til the summer again.

What would I do?

The way I have my year set up, I am planning on taking off one week for Easter, one week for Thanksgiving, three weeks for Christmas and that is about it.

I know I will take random days off here and there, but what if I finish in April or May. Then what??

Thanks :)

Do you already have an idea of what college you might apply to? Does that college require SAT subject test results? If so, having just finished Pre-Calculus you might consider using the month of May to review for the SAT subject test in Math.

Alternatively, you might do an intensive one month study in an area that interests you .... The Tudors? Read half a dozen novels?

Or you might volunteer at an organization that is looking for helping hands.

Thanks. I suppose I am just a worrier :)

Reading half a dozen novels ON the Tudors sounds lovely :drool5:

But, I suppose studying for SAT's sounds pretty okay, lol.

:iagree:

You've gotten great suggestions! If you have the time, extracurriculars are a great way to spend it. They help others, look great on college app's, and can help you figure out what you'd like to do after high school. They are worth spreading out your studies for.

the coming winter/spring (Feb/March) time period would be a good time to look. You'd want to be looking for something before the college kids come home on spring break. You might be an attractive candidate if you could work a couple of days a week in the late spring and be trained for the job, then come summer, you'd be all trained.

Summer jobs are really hard to come by in my part of the state. My son was lucky to find one his senior year, and they liked him enough to have him back this summer, thankfully. He has many friends that weren't so lucky and can't find work.

Another thing to consider if you know how to swim would be to take a lifeguarding course so you could be certified by next summer. Local YMCAs usually offer these a couple of times a year.

I wouldn't worry too much about filling your time if you are efficient enough to finish your work early. I also liked Karen's idea of spending the time in intensive prep for the SAT or ACT.

Unfortunately, I live in the inner city, and most jobs, including fast food joints and such are already filled with middle-aged workers. Nothing towards them, as I am sure they're having difficult times along with everyone else.

I'll look, but the chances of a 17-year-old getting a job paying minimum wage against a middle-aged man/woman getting a job paying minimum wage are pretty slim. Teens aren't trusted anymore, especially in my area. That is what I hate most about the city, I am not trusted because I am a teen. Hmph... cannot wait until I am older and can be a hermit historical writer in a house in the middle of the country with a stream behind it and no neighbors as far as the eye can see. :) Sorry for my ramblings.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone :)

I hear your frustrations, and it's sad that teens are assumed to be lazy & untrustworthy by a lot of people. That really, really bothers my son as well. He loves to shop at our local mall, and he has observed how I am treated at various stores when I'm looking around vs. how he is treated when he shops alone or with another teen. It can be pretty discouraging, huh?

Do you frequent your public library? That might be another place to look for a job. If you go there often to look for books, make sure you talk to the librarians. Ask for their help looking for things. Once they get to know you a bit, inquire about a job.

You also mentioned volunteering at an animal shelter. That's a great way to spend your time, too. Do they hire part-time folks? If so, they might be eager to hire you once they can see that you have a good work ethic.

It probably will be hard to find a job, but hopefully, if you want one and you think about good places to apply and making connections with those folks, you will be able to find something. It's always hard to get that "foot in the door" when you are looking for your first job.

Best wishes,

Brenda

Yeah, the way teens are treated makes me upset as well. That happened to me in Public School a lot. I was on the Video Productions team and would need to interview lots of people and lots of teachers, especially ROTC instructors would be outright rude to me for absolutely no reason. They put on their "tough exterior" every morning for class and I suppose they forget to take it off after classes. One instructor made me cry because he was eating lunch when I asked him for an interview, and he didn't even let me say "I see you're eating let me come back when you're finished". Call me sensitive, but being yelled at for no reason upsets me beyond belief.

The animal shelter I volunteer at is not for profit, so I think they only hire staff when absolutely necessary, but even if I could get more hours volunteering I would love that. I only volunteer Sundays and talked to the coordinator about more hours.

I'll definitely look into the libraries. I am there at least 3x a week, might as well work or just volunteer there. Lol.

Thanks.

I would go w/the SAT/ACt study, dd took Christmas break and studied the whole time, it really helped.

Yeah, I'll be taking a 6 week Christmas break because every year I get Pneumonia in the winter and I have asthma and allergies so I am either hospitalized or on bed rest. Hopefully I'll get Pneumonia in the beginning of Christmas break so I can spend the rest of it studying and doing makeup work.

This will be your first year home, correct? We found that we were healthier as a family away from all the ps germs. I hope that is what you find too.
