Son applied but didn't receive. In TN, it is a lottery based (name out of the hat) type of selection though the hat is filled with certain level of gpa/test score students. A good point is it is one of the few that can be used at out of state colleges. It never hurts to try - go for it!

I just had a conversation with someone at the National NCFCA tournament regarding this.

His son in North Carolina applied and didn't receive it. He knows that based on their school district (the SAT scores, etc) his son should have been awarded it.

When he called whoever was in charge and questioned it, he was told it is based on class randk. To which he answered, he is 1 of 1.

In my area, someone got a scholarship with the individual school (University of Miami) by taking the IOWA and then showing them that he placed in the 98th % (let's say) and that he was in the top 2% of the class in the nation. However, this was a specific scholarship with the school. For which you can get interviews, etc.

It is not looking good for general scholarships.

We looked into it last year, but even though it was "open" to home schoolers, the application was definitely set up for someone in a traditional school setting. Each state is different in their requirements, but a big part of CO's application was recommendations - one from a guidance counselor, one from a teacher, and one from a community person if I'm remembering correctly. I called to ask what a home schooler should use for the g.c., but they didn't have a very good answer. The person was pleasant enough (also new on the job which didn't help), but obviously hadn't dealt with many homeschooled applicants. He didn't think it should be me as a parent; I suggested having two teacher ones, and he didn't think that would work. After much discussion, he finally suggested that we use a person my dd interned under and just call them the guidance counselor :001_huh:! We looked at their sample "winning" letters of recommendation, and it was obvious that all of them were familiar with multiple aspects of the student, i.e. the teacher knew all about their extra-curriculars and involvement in school and community, which would also not have applied, as most dd's teachers would have been long distance and only known her as a student. There were a few other complicating issues with the form, so all that to say, we gave up. We also didn't bother with local scholarships, other than 4H, because we live in a small town in which community groups are very supportive of its school and not terribly favorable toward home schoolers.
