Learning without a textbook

Recommended Posts

I am beginning U.S. II Monday and I was going to use a textbook up until now. So, I counted all the sections, chapter reviews, unit reviews, and worksheets I would have to do. That would be about 188 lessons. Without the unit reviews, about 183.

So, then I was thinking, maybe I can learn all through free resources online and projects. I would have the book to refer to, but the book is full of filler. I am doing a project on Abe Lincoln, but I was going to do it along with the chapter on the Reconstruction.

What did you use for U.S. History? Would a bunch of lapbooks work for learning since I am visual and hands-on anyways?

I was thinking projects, some worksheets, books, and papers. What would you recommend?

I can't spend anymore money though.

When my daughter was studying for the AP US History test she mostly wrote a ton of essays (from AP prep books). She researched from the web (wikipedia) and her textbook. But she had trouble getting anything out of her textbook if she was just reading it. She needed a question to answer or none of the information would stick.

I know that we also got a lot of essay questions on the web by googling ap us history. Lots of teachers put their materials up on the web for these courses. Unfortunately, I don't have those links anymore because that computer died.
