Dishwasher decisions

Recommended Posts

I'm about to buy a Whirlpool dishwasher and can't decide between a couple of different models. The almost top of the line is model GU2700XTS. Price for Stainless is $699! Yikes! Does anyone have this model and do you love it...hate it? Feel nothing special toward it? I can go down a step or two and save less than $100. I want a good one. I had a good one in my last house but the one in this house (been here 5 years) has never made me happy. So I am only a tiny bit sad that it has died.

We love Whirlpool, too. My parents were able to purchase a washer/dryer, stove and refrigerator for us when we were married. They bought them second-hand because they had been used in schools for 2 or 3 years. Those things lasted for years! The only reason that we don't have them today is that we sold them with our first home.

The next dishwasher that I had was a "top of the line" KitchenAid. It was awful. It didn't clean the dishes well at all which was quite disappointing since it was expensive.

We currently have a GE because it came with our house (3rd house). It's a very basic model, but it does an adequate job, and it does have a sanitizing cycle. I like the sanitizing cycle because it really seems to cut down on the "passing around" of illness in our family.

I guess my point is...the extra money doesn't always (sometimes, but not always) mean that the dishwasher is going to do a better job, kwim?

Is sanitizing cycle really that much better?? I thought dishwashers ran at hot temperatures anyways and were pretty reliable to kill germs?? I do get more "paranoid" when there's a bad flu or stomach bug going around the family, but never thought that we'd need sanitizing cycle for when we have guests or someone's got a cold or just every day use....

We have sanitizing cycle on washing machine & THAT I love. Great for bedsheets and towels!! Hmmm... now you have me wondering if WE need a new dishwasher too.... :D

I don't know whether or not they're better statistically, but ours has made a definite difference in illness level. I know that this *could* be coincidence, but we have temporarily stopped using the sanitizing feature from time to time to save a little more $$ and energy, and each time I have noticed our illnesses increase. Well, to be more accurate, I've noticed the incidence of *spreading* illness to each and every family member increase. (how's that for a badly worded sentence) So, for us, it makes a difference. YMMV. :D
