looking for input on physics class I want to teach

Recommended Posts

I am planning to teach a high school physics class for hsers starting in the fall. I have actually taught physics at a community college for several semesters, but that was before kids.

My plan is to have a 1.5 hour class 2x/week with a 1 hour lab 2x/month.

I don't have a specific time set for this yet, but something like Tu/Th 2-3:30 every week with the time extended to 4:30 on Thursday 2x/month so we can get our labs done as well.

I need to do this class next year for my 10th grader, so I will be doing it whether I have any other students or not.

I would need to charge $75/month with a $100 one-time supply fee. That works out to $5/hour for me and covers the cost of buying Labpaqs (plan to have two kids working with each labpaq).

Does this seem like a reasonable amount? I'd love to get more than $5/hour, but I don't see how I could do a good job on the course in less time and I think any more than that would put it out of reach for too many people.

One Day Academy has high school science classes for $60/month, but they meet for just 1.5 hours/week. They do the labs in class, but that doesn't leave much time left over for instruction. They also charge $40 for registration and another $50 for supplies. My class would cost $10 more up front and another $15/month for over twice as much classroom time.

Does this sound reasonable?

At our co-op, you can register for Physics for $300 for a full year, so $75 per month sounds a little steep. For that matter, you could take the class at the community college for a little over $400.

If you have more students, you don't need as much per student, and the amount of work you do doesn't go up much with each additional student. I don't think you can really look at it as how much per hour you make.
