So, I let both my dd's look at American Pageant and Tindall's America and

Recommended Posts

The problem is that they have each cast their vote for a different book. My middle one, who loves history, likes the Tindall America hands down. My eldest, who complained that American Pageant is boring, claims that

Tindall is even more boring. Ds isn't even close to using these, so he's not getting a vote; the final vote is up to me, but I'm in a huge dilemma.

My eldest could get her way, but she's likely to complain about history regardless of which book we use unless she undergoes a magnificent transformation in attitude between now and when she starts (the ever hopeful mother speaking here.) My younger one doesn't get nearly as many choices since we try to keep using what we already owned, although we do have quite the collection of curricula for her to choose from for Algebra 1. I may end up choosing by price, but I'm off to check the other books we need to use with them, ideally used. I grew up in Canada, so really didn't study a lot of US history, and what you have to study for citizenship is very paltry, IMO.

In the words of the page from King Bidgood's in the Bathtub, "Oh, who knows what to do?" :tongue_smilie::glare:

I would go and buy each one the one that they wanted...used for pretty cheap on Amazon or ebay. I would then have them do assignments based on their own books and compare results. Maybe there is different info, bias, focus etc. Could make it very interesting.

I can't decide on which textbook to use for my upcoming junior to prepare for the Spring 2011 SAT subject test in US History. I know this thread has been discussed before, but I just can't seem to get a grasp on it!

I want the perfect text that he can read on his own - and touch base with me each Friday - that's engaging yet will prepare him for the test.

I can't remember, did you rule out American Journey?

Wow, for some reason I don't remember this. Why??? I'll look for that at the library now, too.

ETA Now I can't find where you suggested this. I searched for American Journey, but WTM searches don't allow quotes, so I got a bunch of replies with the separate words & not together. Who wrote this? I can't do quotes for my library, either, and have over 100 hits, and none so far look right.

You make a good point. This could be a bit like what we've done for Algebra. Then ds would have a choice when his turn comes. They'll be doing it different years, so I probably won't compare and don't have to buy them both at once, although I probably will to be done with it. In my ideal plan, they'd read one conservative & one liberal American history, but that's not likely to happen with my eldest. It means I'll need to get an OLDER used one instead of a newer used one. Good thing she likes the smell of musty books, just in case that's the case.

I didn't suggest it, someone else did. It seemed to get better reviews so I went with it. So far I'm happy but I have only leafed through it.

Okay. Do you know the author or the publisher? Is there a workbook or some type of book with questions/quizzes or something like that?

This is one of the threads I saw it one. It's the last post.

I bought this one:

http://www.amazon.com/American-Journey-Update-Combined-5th/dp/0205739148/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276027875&sr=8-10

ETA that I don't know if there is a workbook. I bought it to use as a resource to use with TRISMS so I didn't look.

Thanks. I went there & found a link to the book. Hopefully my library network has it, because I've decided not to purchase without my dd's looking at this one. This isn't always how it works, but I'm so tired of the fight with my eldest doing history for school. She claims she likes history, but not for school because then it's boring. It hardly matters what we use, but if she picks the one she uses then she can't blame me for the book. She lies the World History book we have, just hates the assignments and wants them put out by the publisher instead of done by me, and I don't mind.

The book she linked to is an older edition. The link I put is to the newer edition. I don't know if that matters but thought I'd point out that they are different.

Thanks. I ordered a used copy for $2 so she can look at it, and it's probably older, but I hate to pay more just for checking out a book. I also ordered used Tindall materials for my middle one and a used American Pageant (cheap) while I was at it. This is it; everyone uses something I've ordered :). I have Teaching Company American History lectures to go along with whichever book each dc uses. I am done, done, done with ordering history. It's so slow finding all the different components used.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to my American History material questions.
