Looking for history recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I will have a 9th grader next year. We have thoroughly covered American History over the last two years. I would like to cover Ancient History next year. So here are my questions:

1. Could ancient history count as world history?

2. If not, can someone recommend a world history course that covers ancient history?

3. Ideally, I would like to include my upcoming 4th grader in the lessons. Does anyone have a recommendation for a program that would work for both a 4th and a 9th grader? Any necessary tweaking is fine....

Thanks in advance for your advice! The hive never lets me down.

In our state, ancient history does not count for world. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of a program that would work for such a broad age range. 4th is still teetering between grammar and logic while high school is moving into rhetoric.

Have you considered MOH? If I recall, they do have lesson plans for a wide age range. You could supplement SOTW for your 4th grader. Your 9th grader would need more supplemental reading too. That starts with ancient history and moves forward in the 3 volumes currently available.

Maybe Streams of Civilization? Again, supplement SOTW for your youngest. Add additional reading and essays for your 9th grader.

Just a few quick ideas........

Louisiana high school graduation requirements -- doesn't look like your state restricts using ancient history from fulfilling your world history credit.

As Holly already said, the gap between 4th and 9th would be too great to use just one set of books, resources, questions and assignments. However, there are a number of programs which have different books/resources and assignments for different levels of learners all in one TM, and which focus on ancient history, such as Tapestry of Grace, Mystery of History, My Father's World, Biblioplan, Trisms, and Truth Quest. Tapestry of Grace is the one that best spans those age ranges; the others do so with varying degrees of success -- they tend to be geared for the younger years, with high school as an add-on. All are Christian-based; Tapestry of Grace is probably the only one that could be used secularly.

BEST of luck in finding what works for your family! Warmest regards, Lori D.

:iagree:Tapestry of Grace would be a great solution. The Rhetoric Level is excellent, esspecially in Yr. 1, which is the ancients, the Upper Grammar books are also some of our favorites. This is the most Bible intensive year in Tapestry though. Many of the books can be purchased used and found in the library. Best of luck in choosing your curriculum!
