English/Literature credits

Recommended Posts

I have been contemplating how many credits I would give for English/Literature. I plan on reading a lot of American Literature this year. At least 10 books. Now, many people on these boards say Literature is a part of English, and I see their argument, but a lot of people on here also say they listed separately. For English, I plan on doing penmanship, grammar, vocab, and composition at least 3 times a week.

If I plan on reading at least 10 books for Literature and then doing Grammar, Handwriting, Vocab, and Composition for English, could I list these as separate credits? I feel I need a lot of instruction in Grammar, so that would take a lot of time, but I would also write essays about the books I read, and do literary analysis.

IF you list these courses separately, why? And did colleges ask for an explanation as to why you listed them separately or just left it as is?

Thank you.

The homeschool assoc. I am under suggested making the class Honors English. Is has a higher A for GPA, I think it is 4.5. I wasn't allowed to make an extra credit, but the extra work was rewarded by making it honors. You may have to check with others from your state to see if it is handled the same there. You can also add some of the extra books to your history, possibly making it honors as well.

What exactly does Honors mean? I understand that I cannot put AP on my transcript because the course would need to be screened by the college AP group?? but I thought Honors was the same way.

So basically, if I believe a course load is heavier than a regular class, I mark it off as Honors?

A couple of my children read way over and beyond what would be in a typical high school English course. They also did various projects relating to it. I didn't feel I could give them an extra Literature credit every year, even though they easily could have earned it. (Somehow 4 literature classes on their transcript sounded redundant.) But I certainly gave them 1 literature class credit.
