angela in ohio
We finally received our EXPLORE results! My little "I don't know how to bubble in answers" girl got really lucky, as her scores were reported. My older dd thought she saw the test administrator put younger dd's test aside, so either he or the scorer must have seen her error. They both qualified for the Davidson Young Scholars program, based on these scores. What are the advantages of the program? Is it worth applying? TIA!! JenneinCA
Possibly. In order to apply you need both an IQ test and an achievement test. From the way I am reading the application form the EXPLORE only counts as the achievement test part. You can apply with only one type but it is apparently much harder to get in. I would definitely call them and ask if EXPLORE counts as both. The email address is: davidsonscholars@ditd.org The website that lists the benefits is here: http://www.ditdgifted.org/Articles.aspx?ArticleID=75&NavID=0_22 I hope you get good information. angela in ohio
From the way I read it, EXPLORE is half of our qualification and the other half is their IQ test. I am just unsure as to how much help they are for homeschoolers, or if they are mostly helpful in getting accomodations from schools. LexiR
Delurking.... I'm really just crashing for Explore thoughts, LOL! But I will comment that I find the greatest benefit of DYS to be the parent support. If you have that already through here, or other groups, you might not need something like DYS. The gathering events are great too of course, but less tangible giving the size of the country! We don't homeschool, and do get advocational support, but truly most of that is from other btdt parents. I know their homeschool lists are just as helpful for those that homeschool. They also offer online conferences with professional experts, and homeschooling issues are often addressed. As for qualification criteria, you provide the IQ test results, but it's best if it's one of the 2 on from their list (SB-5 or WISC-IV). That combined with qualifying achievement results (Explore) will get your application looked at. Kids have gotten accepted with just one, via the portfolio path, but I do think you need some impressive "side dishes" to go that route (videos, competitions, tangible work products, etc). I was thrilled to read that your daughter's results were hand scored!!!!! HTH!
JenneinCA
They are mostly helpful in getting accomodations in schools. As a homeschooler the most valuable part is their email lists. They have several very talkative email lists with lots of good information. Sometimes it is nice to just be able to talk about your kids and not be the weirdest ones. The Davidson lists are that way for me. About the tests, Davidson does not give any IQ tests. You would need to get them from some other source, and they can be expensive. We did the testing because we needed the information from the tests. The fact that the scores qualified for the Davidson program was a bonus. We would not have tested just to qualify. It isn't worth it.

You know at some point in the last few weeks (while I was getting bored waiting for our scores!) I googled something that turned up a copy of the instructions for test proctors, and I think it allowed them to fill in improperly colored circles if they saw them. I meant to PM you, except I couldn't remember which board I'd read your original comment on! As far as DYS, I'd say it's worth it for the parent support. At some point I might need them to find me a mentor for DS, but for now it's all about having another email list, and especially one where no one says "He's how old??" LOL
wimseycat
Hi Angela, My son was accepted by Davidson several years ago and we homeschool. They have been very helpful in obtaining more advanced (i.e. expensive) curriculum that I probablly wouldn't have been able to buy on my own for him. I have found them to be very helpful in whatever capacity you may need them. The homeschool lists also contain a wealth of information from parents who have BTDT. Hope this helps, Annika
Academy of Jedi Arts
Davidson is absolutely worth applying for! Once you are accepted to the program, you are assigned a family consultant. We just got switched to a new one, and don't know her very well yet, but the one we had was great at finding resources for dd's varying interests. If we ever have had concerns, they have given us lots of information. Some of my friends have gotten professional consultations with top experts when needed. They will not only advocate for school programs, but other outside programs and classes. For us, the financial assistance has been helpful as well. Dd has enjoyed the online mini-classes they have for the kids, and I have enjoyed the seminars for adults. The best part of DYS for us is the gatherings. They offer great activities and experiences for the kids and parents. :seeya: To all the other DYS parents here.
