TXMary2
Has anyone used the CW Older Beginners in 9th grade? I am set on using it, but just curious what other people thought of it. I looked at the sample and I think it is exactly what my son needs. Especially the remedial grammar. I was going to use Rod and Staff remedial English until I saw this program. It appears to be what we need for writing and grammar and perhaps vocabulary, but I am a little confused how vocabulary works with this program. Currently we use WW and I'd like to continue with that but not if it is going to be overkill. Opinions or experience?
Amy in TX
I used this with an 11th grader to try to increase her reading comprehension before taking the SAT. I'm not sure how helpful it was for that, because it can't make up for a lifetime of not reading. However, it probably would make a good review for a 9th grader, who would still be going on with further study in high school. It's certainly a very thorough vocabulary, sentence analysis, and narrative analysis curriculum. My only complaint is that a few (not all) of the reading selections are rather childish for "older" beginners (Beatrix Potter, etc.) :)

For the vocab you just have them identify words they are not familiar with, look them up, analyze them for spelling (you can skip this step, more later) , and then define it. They provide the form you use for vocab. If you are not familiar with the marking system they borrow you can either check out or pick up a used copy of Writing Road to Reading. The older versions would work fine for this purpose. If you needed to skip it in order to do WW you could, just have him ask you what words mean when he reads the model to you. It does do a good job of covering grammar and having the child then use it. Heather
