What will prepare a dc well for Dolciani/LoF for HS?

Recommended Posts

Lately there's been "math trouble" at my house. So, it's given me the "opportunity" to look at other programs.

What should I use (& in what order, & what to supplement with or combine with) to set my dc on the path to '60's - '70's Dolciani (using proofs to the fullest) w/ some LoF for HS?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you've been using, so it's hard to say. For the LOF part, I'd start some LoF before high school. There's LOF Fractions, Decimals and Pre-Algebra. As for Dolciani, only one of my dc has done that so far, and she did it her second time through Algebra 1. He prep was doing Algebra with Lial's (and a few other things that flopped.)

My middle dd is doing/has this (I'll italicize where she is at the moment:)

Singapore Math 2B-6B along with MUS (won't bore you with why both, but SM I'd emphasize)

Mathematics from http://www.perpendicularpress.com which is a Russian Math

Life of Fred Beginning Algebra

Dolciani Structure and Method Algebra 1 (if she's ready for that kind of rigour--she's on the young side, so she may do LOF Advanced Algebra first if she's ready. Otherwise, I have no idea what I'll choose in the middle.)

My ds is doing LoF Fractions now, and will do Decimals next. He'll probably do LoF pre-Algebra along with the Russian Math when he gets there. He's such a different type of learner that it's hard to say for sure. My dd's read LoF and get it, but he needs more teaching by me right now.

We've only used Horizons and Abeka as our main math programs. I've seriously looked into Singapore (have bits on the shelves), RightStart (have the games on the shelves), and am currently looking into MEP.

I don't want to switch programs around b/c that disrupts things, with programs having different scopes/sequences from one another and things not lining up neatly from one program to the next. I'll switch if I really have to (i.e., if ds is still miserable after tweaking what we're doing).

Is it worth switching just because I've now found things I wish I'd been doing with my dc all along? I feel like I could "mess them up" if I make the wrong decision.

I was thinking of trying to continue on w/ Abeka/Horizons as our main programs (ea. ds has a different one) but making the load lighter for them in these to make room for some supplement from another program. I'd lighten the load of the main program by no longer doing every. single. thing in the TM (redundant) and trying to make the supplement a "fun math games/puzzles" time. Those other programs look like fun math puzzles to me, anyhow. :tongue_smilie:

My kids have all only used Horizons as their sole math program for elementary grades. (I have never supplemented with anything else.)

We have never used Dolciani, but none of my kids have had any problems with Foersters and one of my kids is thriving in AoPS.

I have found Horizons to be a great foundation for higher level math.

That's fine. I put all this in because you asked. I've heard good things about horizons. I love MEP, and use it as a summer supplement with my youngest who loves math. I think that any good solid program should prepare you. There are some math programs where I might be concerned about the transition, but not what you have based on what I've read about them.
