What would you do for a 1 year bible course?

Recommended Posts

I would like to take an Old Testament survey. My mother and I will most likely make up our own lessons and use worksheets online. What would you add to make it one year?

I was going to do it 1/2 year but the Old Testament has so much to cover and is so interesting I want to drag it out as long as I possibly can. I also wanted to take a New Testament Survey Senior year so I figure I should make them both full year.

What kinds of projects, essays, field trips would you suggest?

Also, how would you list this on a transcript?

Simply call it, Old Testament Survey?

For field trips, I watch out for exhibits at my local museums. I've seen exhibits on Ancient Treasures of the Holy Lands, Dead Sea Scrolls, Hatshepsut, Picturing the Bible: The Earliest Christian Art, King Tut, The St. John's Bible.

It's amazing - someone creates these exhibits with artifacts from all over the world (depending on the specific one). I usually go on half price day for less than $10 - a great bargain.

For Bible study, you might try Search the Scriptures. It's a 3 year study of the whole Bibe, but you can probably modify it to fit your situation since you want to do both OT and NT. - http://www.christianbook.com/search-scriptures-devotional-guide-whole-bible/alan-stibbs/9780830811205/pd/811201?item_code=WW&netp_id=344431&event=ESRCN&view=details

Don't forget The Teaching Company. I've not viewed any of the Bible lectures, but you will probaly find one or more to fit your needs.

Dd isn't really studying the Bible, just reading it. She's using the One Year Bible, doing each day's assigned reading. I think just being familiar with it will make future study, if she wants that, easier.

The Bible and Its Influence

If you google it you can see sample pages. It covers a wide breadth of how the Bible has influenced our culture. It is well laid out with bible readings, and chapter readings. At the end of each chapter there are two or three projects to choose from...some involving research online, some watching movies. My ds has really enjoyed this text even though he already knew much about the Bible. It has made him see it from a different point of view. this text is being used in some public schools also.

An idea: go to a Christian bookstore. Find the NIV Study Bible. At the beginning of each book, there are background pages. I have this Bible, it has very good footnotes, and maps as well. My 20 y/o son looked at it and really likes it, in fact, I am going to have to get him his own before I get mine back! Also, there will be Bible study books you can look at if you want a theme type thing. You will probably be fine with the study bible. If you want a book that will review facts you have read (fill in the blank), this is good, it is called Bread of Life Old Testament Study Guide:

Even though this says younger, I even enjoyed doing Greenleaf Guide to Old Testament History with my kids, it has good questions to think about:

Have you looked at Kingdom of God by Francis Breisch, Jr.? Here is Christian Liberty's description:

This text by Francis Breisch, Jr., provides high school students with a thorough Old Testament survey course. Each of the books of the Old Testament is analyzed in detail, and students are provided with thought provoking comprehension questions and map work. (Christian Schools International)

http://www.wheaton.edu/english/faculty/ryken.htm His books are excellent for a literary study of the Bible from the perspective of evangelical Christianity. If you want something that is not in that vein and more purely academic in approach you could try this http://www.prufrock.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=854

We are using Stephen Harris' texts as we are interested purely from an academic POV http://stephenharrisauthor.com/books.shtml. I hope one of these might be of use .

We used the Greenleaf Press Guide to the Old Testament this year. Everyone really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how you would go about doing field trips unless you can plan a trip to Israel!

We also enjoyed Victor's Journey Through the Bible to go along with the Greenleaf Text.

You and your mom or dad could look in to going to Bible Study Fellowship. They meet once a week for two hours. In class they will teach you how to do homiletics, you have a group discuission to go through your lesson and a lecture on what you just studied. The homework for BSF takes between a 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day. It just depends on the depth of the questions for that day. For the school year 2010-2011 they will be studying the book of Isaiah. I'll post a link in case your interested. This takes enough time that you would be able to take 1 credit for it.
