LisaC
I am looking into starting my dd (9th grade next yr) with Omnibus III. We have been following WTM for two years, but she has not tackled anything as meaty as Omnibus. She is a good reader, but hasn't had to push herself through difficult material before--which I would like for her to begin. My brother used Notgrass last year with his dd (also 9th). Do you have any thoughts on either of these? Other recommendations?
newbie
My dd 13, 9th grade did Omni III this past year. She enjoyed it, there were a couple books to preread, and perhaps edit, depending on dc. But, she worked thru it well. Veritas has a new class in summer, It is called pre Omni, that gives them a lil cursor into Omnibus. Might be a good primer, I hear it is filling up. Do you know if the course through VP only, or can I order the materials and teach on my own?
newbie
I dont know, check veritaspress.com. I am thinking it is teacher led. I just heard it thru the grapevine. I was thinking that would have been a great class last summer for her.
Suzannah
We're doing Omnibus 3 this year for 7th grade. We don't do any of the writing assignments since we use Classical Writing, and some of the reading is challenging for DS, but I do think it is great program that can be used from middle through high school. Last year we did Omni 2 in a year, but this year we just did the first half of vol. 3--sticking with the WTM history cycle (and adding other WTM-recommended readings for 7th) We'll be doing the second half of Omni 3 next year for 8th grade, then circling back to Omnibus 1 for 9th. At that point I'll figure out what we want to do next. Choose your readings. You don't have to do every single one to really get the benefit of the program. There's a guide at the back of the text to show at a glance how the Veritas teachers weight the different readings for history, literature or theological value. There's also a timeline showing where the books fall in relation to other events and a guide showing approximately how long each study will take (although YMMV.) Blessings! proudmamma
Jet, I cannot find the pre Omni class. I have looked on their site under summer courses but am not seeing it. Could you point me in the right direction?
laughing lioness
Omni has lots of writing assignments, but no writing instruction. I'd keep at writing with another program as well. The reading is broad and fairly mature. I'd look at the schedule realistically and determine ahead of time what reading can realisitically be done given the other commitments your student will have. It is actually not a summer class yet. It will be offered for next school year for students ages 11-14. Since we have never taught it, we are holding off on offering it over the summer until we can see if that is doable. I think it has been announced in the same announcements as the summer classes. Therefore, there has been a little confusion.
proudmamma
Oh darn! I would love to do it over the summer in order to have a child ready this fall for Omnibus. Are there lesson plans I could use in order to do this myself? Do you happen to have any suggestions on how to speed it up in order to accomplish this over a summer term? This is the first we have ever done this. So, my husband and I are writing the plans. Unfortunately, I do not see us being done with the whole year before the summer. However, if you PM me, I would be happy to give you some ideas.
angela in ohio
Is this it? History Survey and Transition It looks like one class is full, but the other has room. The page I linked gives the supply list.
