MelanieM
On the 'what are you reading' thread someone posted about The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England and after a quick look, I'm quite excited to get my hands on a copy. I'm also in line for Susan Wise Bauer's History of the Medieval World, which should be at my library any day now. Does anyone have other recommendations similar to these, for any time period? Carol in Cal.
very much, although it's pretty old now and I'm not sure that it reflects current scholarship in all its particulars. It's fun to read, though. I like the weighty tomes by Doris Kearns Goodwin on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt a great deal. Who would have thought that there would be so much to say about her, and that such long books could be so interesting?

A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester and The Italian Renaissance by Professor JH Plumb Absolutely anything by Daniel Boorstin but that's a personal prejudice.:D

Faithr
I enjoyed 1215 The Year of the Magna Carta. I also enjoyed Longitude by Dava Sobel as well as Gallileo's Daughter by the same author. In American history I just read last summer, 1776 by David McCullough. And this winter I enjoyed Best Little Stories from the Wild West by C. Brian Kelly. A Distant Mirror and The Guns of August both by Barbara Tuchman are also classic histories. Another great book I've read recently was How the Scots Invented the Modern World. Really eye-opening! Edited May 11, 2010 by Faithr remembered another book!
