Hunter's Moon
Would anyone like to share their high school schedules with me?
Jeannie in NJ
I don't remember what grade you will be next year, but here is my dd's schedule for next year, 10 th grade. she will start about 9:00 and do these classes daily: algebra 2 chemistry U.S. History 2 english 2 (literary analysis and lots of essay writing, along with some reports and some literature, probably some American lit.) p.e. and health electives, probably will not be done daily: baking and cake decorating (preparing for culinary school at age 18) either art lessons or latin, haven't decided yet for a total of 7 classes in the spring, dd may take one class at our local community college, just a general class like Intro to Computers or Intro. to Visual ARts for 11th and 12th grade, she will be taking a lot of her classes at the cc for dual enrollment
Gwen in VA
Schedule? What's a schedule? :) We do school in the morning until something else needs to be done -- piano practice or volunteering or whatever. From then on school gets smooshed in between all the others things that are on the agenda -- from music practices to CAP, from Bible studies to swing dancing. Saturday is the day for doing whatever didn't happen during the rest of the week. Occasionally it's quite busy. And Sunday is occasionally the overflow day from Saturday. And on really bad weeks, Monday is the overflow day..... But we value the extracurriculars and consider them as important as the academic subjects. Sometimes it just gets a bit crazy! mathmom
This schedule is subject to change over the next few weeks, but I think my 10th grader will be doing the following next year: English II through the Mississippi Virtual Public School program AP Human Geography through PA Homeschoolers Honors Chemistry with ChemAdvantage.com Algebra II with me :) using a combo of AoPS and other materials I have from my working years *maybe* Mandarin Chinese III with a private tutor (We may switch to either Japanese or Swedish depending on how travel opportunities look.) That's it for formal academic work. The fun stuff includes: Formalizing his computer programming tinkering by listening in on open source classes from Stanford and MIT. We are also working on setting him with an online internship with a friend of mine that develops apps for Apple products. Interning with a former cheerleading buddy of mine that is a producer for a radio cooking show. Sushi thinks he may want a career in the food industry, so it is a good fit. Creating even more Steampunk costumes and artifacts. He has been working on his sewing skills and is getting pretty good. His former middle school theater teacher may have some backstage opportunities in local productions related to this! But our number 1 goal is for Sushi to get healthy. He hasn't been the same since he was diagnosed with mono in November.
Heather in VA
I never know if these questions mean 'I do X from 9 - 10, Y from 10 - 11' etc or what classes do we have planned. We don't have one of those time schedules so I'll do the classes plan. You can see our 9th in my signature. For 10th: Life of Fred Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry Omnibus IV Classical Writing Plutarch Latin II via VP online class DIVE Biology with Campbell text World Religions (elective) via VP online class Debating whether we'll do Rhetoric this year or wait until 11th Heather
Susan C.
My ds liked to do math first and get it out of the way, my dd said it was horrible to do math in the morning, and liked to get her reading out of the way in the morning. Both found that starting early in the morning was way more productive.
Brindee
I'm like some of the others above. DD works best NOT having a schedule. My oldest NEEDED a schedule. So, as an above poster said, you need to tweak things around 'til you find a groove that works for you. DD also does best with math in the morning and science in the afternoon. The others we shall see. She has more reading next year than this year, so we'll have to figure out how to work that in. She also is in a group that she and a friends started that is helping raise money for a playground for autistic children--a $30,000 project! They just presented the project to a group that my chiropractor started, and he said they're probably going to give $2,000! WooHoo! Plus we volunteer at the Humane Society once or more times per week (one is a set weekly time, the other times are as needed). Those things are very important to her, and to my dh and me, so those are given time. She's learning so much from both things! Sooooo, we'll have to juggle things around for awhile. Hopefully it won't take TOO long to figure out what works best! Oh, in case you're wanting Which classes, she'll be doing: MFW Ancient History & Lit. which will count for Bible, History and English. Biology 101 with LOTS of reading and some papers and a lab TT Algebra 2 Spanish Piano Lessons and performances Intro. to Logic, which will consist of Fallacy Detective and The Thinking Toolbox (1 semester) Home Ec (1 semester) P.E.--riding lessons, walking, Wii So, she'll be busy-ish, but this is what she wanted, so I think it's going to be a great year! jld
As soon as dd15 gets up, she does that day's reading from the One Year Bible. Then she does one lesson (about 2 hours) of Saxon Adv. Math. More than one lesson a day is too much past Algebra I, she says. Then 2 hours of Apol. Chem I, followed by 2 hours of Apol. Bio I. She eats somewhere in there, too. Then we'll do a Spanish lesson, or she'll read some history, or do some lit, or maybe some Latin or French. Around 6 p.m. she goes to the gym to work out. She may do some more reading in the evening, or catch up on something, or just play a game with her brothers. Since dh often works Saturdays, this is her schedule on Sat., too. On Sunday she usually does some schoolwork, but may just do some free reading. Right now things are very different because she's in France helping her grandparents put in their garden, making cidre (the alcoholic kind, lol), and watching her little brothers enjoy the little farm. She's cut way back on schoolwork in order to get the most out of the experience (maybe only doing 3-4 hours a day). When she comes back to India next month, she'll add Saxon physics to her schedule (my guess is 2 hours a day). We plan to go back to America for two months, probably Sept. and Oct., and I want to keep it as schoolwork-free as possible, except for free reading from the library. Dd will insist on doing math, and some science labs, but that's it. I want her to help me get the house reorganized after the remodel, and get the stuff in the basement sorted out and boxed up so we can move to that phase of the remodelling. I also want her to just enjoy our time there, visiting friends, going to parks and museums with her little brothers, baking, and doing some travelling. I don't know what I would do without her. Okay, I have veered way off the topic! Sorry!
