1shortmomto4
I need to find a reasonably priced, easy to implement Chemistry course for my 11th grader for next year. He is NOT science-minded but does love the math involved. He is a video/audio learner so it is key that I add a video component to his teaching or he is unable to engage. I don't mind using a 'spine' and then supplementing but unsure what to do. He does BJU courses but his skills in science are just not strong enough for their science. I know there is is ACE but the reviews on Chemistry are the least favorite and for the money, I need something that, for the most part, has a high level of "great" reviews - kwim? Any ideas? I had thought about piecing together pieces ala Charlotte Mason (I've done this with the PacWorks Bio) but prefer something more scheduled out for Chemistry. Pam L in Mid Tenn
I just got my copy of Conceptual Chemistry yesterday. It is an intro to chemistry for liberal arts majors. I glanced it over yesterday and it looks good!. I found a used copy on Amazon for about $45. It came with a DVD or CD that I have not explored yet. It is a brand new hardback. It does have a college sticker, but obviously no one ever used this book. There are video lessons online (and that might be what that disk is in the book). There are little home done labs too. There is a good website for this book. But I don't have the link right now. I few other moms here use it and you might get some more info from them. hsmomto5
The guy that teaches these taught with Apologia Academy last year. My son did the live Marine Biology class and loved it. He now has DVD's that you can order to go along with Apologia's Chemistry. I too have a not so science minded student but I want him to at least have some good exposure to Chemistry. http://redwagontutorials.com/ Lora in NC
Ohdanigirl
Have you checked out the free MIT one? http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Chemistry/5-111Fall-2008/CourseHome/index.htm#features Someone told me they used it for their child and it worked well. Exams and solutions are included.
Corraleno
The video lectures for the first 12 chapters (the core) of Conceptual Chemistry are now available free on Suchocki's website. If your son is into the math, the Teaching Company has a High School Chemistry course that's all about the math. Jackie
EKS
If he loves the math involved, do NOT use Conceptual Chemistry! It goes *way* out of it's way to avoid as much math as possible.
1shortmomto4
If I used the Teaching Company option do you have any suggestions for an accompanying text? Or could he read a variety of chemistry-type books that dig a bit deeper some chemistry topics? Could I use a kit like Chem2000 for a lab? I hesitate to use the one that is used for the Apologia book because we tried the Physical Science and General Science and both were just not a good fit - so we ended up going a different direction. Conceptual Chemistry sounds great but perhaps not for this child but his ds in another year or two. ha ha!
Storm Bay
I agree that Coneptual Chemistry could be a great fit in this situation. Thinkwell also has Chemistry lectures, but only lectures. Originally I was going to have dd do Chemistry Alive! and Thinkwell lectures, but she lollygagged too much.
Heather in VA
What about DIVE? You can choose from several different accompanying texts or even just a syllabus with internet links. The DIVE lectures run the show and the syllabus assigns additional readings from whichever text you pick. It even has the labs on the video. The DVD is $50. Corraleno
If I used the Teaching Company option do you have any suggestions for an accompanying text? The professor recommends this text: Matter and It's Changes. Jackie
