I figured I'd ask what everyone likes in the free/cheap resources?

I'm planning to try KISS Grammar and I may also try some MEP to supplement our Math Mammoth. However, this will be our first year and I have no idea if I will even like these resources once I start using them! I think it would be nice to have a list of stuff other people have tried and liked.

We like MEP. We just use the worksheets (not the teaching suggestions in the lesson plans) as a supplement to CLE. (CLE doesn't necessarily NEED supplementation; I just like how MEP makes them think a bit differently, and they love the fact that they get to color and figure out patterns and fun stuff like that).

I really, really like MEP. I didn't at first, and used it as a supplement. It is now our main. I plan to use KISS next year, after going through Nesbit's Grammar Land (on Google books).

I use Ambleside as well. And for a teen / adult Linney's Latin Class has free lectures for a public domain book (First Year Latin, Google books).

Ambleside Online and Old Fashioned Education.

I'm not using either one of these, but I've always said that if I had no budget for homeschool (but still had internet access and a printer!), then I'd definitely follow their suggestions. I did consider using OFE when dd was in 1st grade, but I could see where it would get too time-consuming once I had several levels to teach (and I didn't take the time to figure out how I would combine later on). I do prefer "real books" in my hand to printouts, but I do still look at OFE's suggestions from time to time and we have read a couple of random books (that I printed out) here and there.

:iagree:with the previous posters.

We currently use MEP and have been for 2 years. We use Scott's grammar on occasion. I burn Librivox audio books for the kids to listen to at bedtime. We used starfall for an entire year and my kids LOVED it. We'd still use it but we're so busy with our current book curriculums.

We were low on funds for homeschooling and so I did the OFE for the first 1.5 years of our homeschooling adventure. It was ALOT more work that had to be put into it because I am teaching 2 grade levels. However we still use some of the suggestions. I use to religiously link that website, recommend it to many families and constantly visit the site...now that we're going a different direction now that we've managed some funds to purchase things to make homeschooling a bit less stressful on the house I rarely visit it. But it's still a site I'd suggest for anyone stepping into homeschooling.

enchantedlearning.com $20 per year

In previous years there has been a coop on another forum (amitymama) that brings the price of Enchanted Learning down to ~$3 per family by ordering a school subscription. The subscription isn't due for renewal until June, but if/when a renewal thread goes up I'll post a link to it here. :)

We've been using Word Mastery, a phonics program off the Don Potter site, and it's been great. We plan on using Webster's Spelling off of there, too. My DD loves starfall. Nothing that hasn't already been posted comes to mind though.

Bumping up to provide info on the Enchanted Learning subscription. :D

The Amitymama forum Enchanted Learning subscription renewal is underway. You can participate even if you've never subscribed before. The cost is $2.50 for a year's subscription, and the new subscription will begin in early June. You'll have to register as an Amitymama user to participate and use non-cc/personal PayPal for payment. You can find the discussion thread here: link.

(Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the company, I won't benefit financially if you choose to subscribe through the Amitymama forum, yadda yadda yadda. :D)

This looks great, but the teacher's guides appear to be only available for SC teachers.... :crying:

Try this link: Where to Find ITV Teacher's Guides. Click on the links in the middle column, which are PDFs.

There aren't guides for the "Again" series, as those appear to be reviews of the corresponding episodes in the main series. And it looks like there are also no guides available for the "Another Step" series. But there are guides for the "First Step" series in all 3 languages, and guides for the "Next Step" series for Spanish and French.

Do you know how long the Enchanted Learning group registration will be open? I would like to pass the information to my small homeschool group but we won't meet until Friday.

Oops, sorry I didn't see this until now! Hopefully it is a moot point and you've already had a chance to talk to your homeschool group. I'm not sure how long registration will be open; try contacting the person who posted the thread on amitymama. :)

Not free, but very cheap.

Primary Language Lessons (1 hb book is all you need for grades 2 & 3)

Intermediate Language Lessons ( 1hb for grades 4, 5 & 6)

Practical Arithmetic by Strayer and Upton. Has lessons, and answers.

Book 1, hb, for grades 3 and 4

Bk 2, hb for grades 5 and 6

Bk 3 hb for grades 6 and 8

These can be used with all of your kids and resold to recoup some of your investment. Each cost about $15 (give or take). You won't find printer ink that cheap! once you acct for the reuse and resale.

I think there are free teacher's guides available somewhere as well but I'm too lazy to look those up this morning :tongue_smilie:

You sure can. If you don't mind reading lessons off the screen that would be the way to go. Personally I would be printing it up, and it would end up costing me more in printer ink. The book is cheaper for me.
