Meg5
I would love to find a fiction/historical fiction book list (Jr. high level and above) that is sorted by country. I know that Sonlight is a source for part of the world. Has anyone ever seen a worldwide list? I could only find picture book lists. My son (14) wants to study high school level geography primarily through literature. thanks, Meg
8filltheheart
How about Let the Authors Speak? http://www.amazon.com/Let-Authors-Speak-Historical-Setting/dp/0964068125
Cynful
All Through the Ages has books listed both chronologically and by location/culture. It also lists books for several different levels. Maybe that would help? http://www.nothingnewpress.com/atta.shtml
mcconnellboys
I've not ever seen a list specifically for older children, but here are some things that perhaps will help get you started. Here is one excellent list: http://www.achildsgeography.com/travel-blog/2009/3/31/living-books-to-study-geography.html'>http://www.achildsgeography.com/travel-blog/2009/3/31/living-books-to-study-geography.html'>http://www.achildsgeography.com/travel-blog/2009/3/31/living-books-to-study-geography.html'>http://www.achildsgeography.com/travel-blog/2009/3/31/living-books-to-study-geography.html It does contain picture books, but also has some for older children. This one might also give you some ideas: http://www.achildsgeography.com/travel-blog/2009/3/31/living-books-to-study-geography.html I'm not seeing any lists that specifically pull out living books for older kids. Hmmmm, look at these two: Royal Road to Romance (covers the world) and Travels in West Africa: http://www.homeschoolchristian.com/curricula/geography/livingbooks.php And that reminds me about Beryl Markham's West with the Night. I think Isak Dinesen might be too mature, perhaps..... Elspeth Huxley's Mottled Lizard and Flame Trees of Thika might be okay, though.... All these are about Africa..... Here are some Australian books that are supposed to be for older children: Extension Book List For older children we have suggested eight Extension Readers. These books are longer than the travel books and can be used as a read alone text. They do not always fit the travel book perfectly but they are linked to the unit study in some way. Older children should be able to participate in the other discussions and activities. My Place by Nadia Wheatley The house that was built in a day-Anzac Cottage by Valerie Everett I said nothing by Gary Crew Crowns of Fire by Amy Mack Farmer Schulz's Ducks by Colin Thiele Papunya School Book by Nadia Wheatley Walking through the Seasons in Kakadu by Diane Lucus Rachel Tonkin books choose one; When I was a Kid, Papa and the Olden Days or To the Goldfields This curriculum gives a list of books by continent (but not by country): http://www.lamppostpublishing.com/geographyaroundworld180days.htm And here's a study using Julie of the Wolves that might give you ideas of activities to do with other books: http://www.coe.ilstu.edu/IGA/Alaska/ALASKAGL1.htm
Meg5
These suggestions really help. I knew I could search the library, but a list would save time. Thanks so much, Meg
