what did you use for American History??

Recommended Posts

Take a look at Notgrass Exploring American History. It is "textbooky" enough that it would be a good bridge between school and home, but, IMHO, it is much richer than just a textbook. It also has literature and Bible included, but you could easily use it just for history. You can read samples at Notgrass.com.

You don't say whether you're Christian, but this is definitely a Christian curriculum, just FYI.

Blessings on you as you begin your journey!

I would recommend, IF you are wanting a Christian POV/Curriculum, My Father's World. It's more rigorous than Notgrass....well, it actually uses Notgrass books, but has wonderful plans/schedule written to the student. It's great for keeping on track and helps them work more independently. The American History will be coming out soon, this summer. They don't have it on their site yet, but you could look and see an idea....

We only used the AM history portion of the program as ds already had a different program for lit and bible.

What I did was use Notgrass coupled with the Teaching Company History of the United States 2nd edition. We sort of used the videos as a lecture component for the course and it balanced out quite nicely.

If you need it, I can share the syllabus match up I devised to pair them up.

I have to add that this was the first time my son enjoyed a history program. He really liked the TTC lectures paired with the other material. Even though I am a history major myself...this was the first time I managed to come up with something that worked for him..

Highjacking for a sec...Do you still have that DVD? Is there a textbook they list for "additional reading". I know the Biology one recommends the Campbell book and some other one, so I was wondering if the History one was the same.

DS is using All American History 1 along with the Teaching Company DVDs. We added in lots of supplemental reading and movies and it has been wonderful.

We will continue with AAH 2 next year.

I am currently looking into the AP History requirements to see if what we have studied will help hime with that test.

Do you and your son like the lecturers for these DVDs? We have loved all our TC professors -- though one fella, the medieval history guy, had an accent that made him a little difficult to understand.

The US History set includes 84 lectures by 3 different professors, and there is a HUGE list of recommended and supplementary reading for each section of the course, but no one particular "spine" for the course as a whole.
