Anyone had a dc write a letter requesting a gap year after acceptance?

Ds has had a wonderful opportunity present itself for a gap year (plus he is a young graduate) and needs to request, in writing, deferred enrollment. Any suggestions for what to put in that letter?

Obviously, he will mention the opportunity but should he mention age? What else? Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mary

Mary,

If they awarded him financial aid or a merit scholarship, I'd be sure to ask about and try to get in writing that they would offer him the same package for next year, provided that your EFC is similar.

There is a thread on College Confidential now about a student who deferred for a year, and he is finding that his financial aid offer this year is much lower than it was last year. He then investigated other schools to which he applied and was accepted to see if they would take him. He found that some schools allow a student to "reactivate" an acceptance, but there may be a cut-off date for this.

Ask lots of questions. Best wishes.

Thanks, Brenda!

We did inquire, prior to acceptance, about the proceudres for a deferral and how scholarships would be affected. At that time, they replied that the merit aid would be held but in this economic climate, I think that is a bit of a gamble still. Of course, all say that the deferral is pending approval.

Thanks for the heads up about the CC thread. I do need to check there.

Appreciate the reply!

my son wrote a letter to UNC Chapel Hill requesting a gap year. He was told to include a description of what he would be doing and be specific about the educational value of the program he was attending.

Thank you, Ruth! Did it take long to receive a reply to the request from the school? I'm wondering how they handle these things once they get them! Each school is likely different, I guess. Best wishes to your son with his gap year.

Thank you. He has a great time and has matured so much.

I don't recall how long it took them to respond. I do remember that he called the college and asked them what they wanted from him. So I guess my advice would be to call the school and check with them.

Good luck. Ruth in NC
