Our developmental vision testing report, Part I

I started a new thread because I am starting to have difficulty following the other thread now that there are so many posts in it. Anyway, here's a summary of our testing report. This was almost 8 years ago now. At that time the testing took two hours and cost about $200. A typed copy of the testing report, which I requested, was an additional $75.

 

Refractive status: (the usual acuity tests and results)

 

Visual form field (what I understand to be field-of-vision): A visual field shows the amount of space the brain is able to process. A normal visual field using the equipment in our office is 30 to 40 degress. Constricted fields (less than the norm) cause a dramatic decrease in the ability to process information visually. (Our initial testing showed fields of only 12 degrees. After VT, normal field of 30 degrees.)

 

Vision Performance Skills: These general areas of visual skills are directly related to a person's academic achievement and their approach to the demands of work in the classroom. Difficulties with vision performance skills usually cause various complaints of visual discomfort and make it difficult to keep focused on any visual task.

 

Focusing (accommodation): The ability to see clearly at a fixed distance and to shift focus quickly with instantaneous clarity from one distance to another. Efficient focusing abilities are needed to enable one to focus from the desk to the blackboard, and to help maintain visual attention without discomfort. (test results given - major problem area for dd)

 

Eye Teaming Abilities (Binocular Fusion and Fixation): The ability to bring the two eyes together so that the images seen by each eye fuse and integrate together, creating a single, clear, comfortable image. Difficulty in maintaining binocular fusion can result in having to use excess effort to do visual work. This can lead to task rejection (daydreaming or avoidance of visual work), diplopia (double vision), or suppression (blocking out the vision of one eye). (test results given - major problem area for dd)

 

Depth Perception (stereopsis): The ability to visually inspect three dimensional objects and accurately judge distances and spatial relationships between two objects. Accurate depth perception is needed for smooth general movement and skilled sport ability. (test results given)

Eye Movement Control: Accurate eye movements are needed in order for a person to accurately perform many tasks such as shifting one's eye along lines of print in a book, effectively scanning vertical columns, making accurate shifts from desk to blackboard, and accurate tracking in sports activities. (test results given for gross pursuits and gross saccadic eye mvoement skills -- problem areas for my dd)

 

Gross pursuits: (the ability to accurately follow a moving target)

Gross saccades: (the ability to move the eyes accurately from one large target to another)

 

Developmental Vision Skills:

 

Balance The ability to obtain physical equilibrium. Some of the skills tested included standing on one foot, walking and standing heel-to-toe, and scissors walk.

 

Gross Motor: Creeping, crawling, walking, running, skipping, hopping.

 

Bilateral Coordination: I think this was ability to cross the mid-line.

 

Visual Analysis/Perceptual Skills: These visual skills are a group of abilities used for recognition, recall, and manipulation of visual information. They are an important part of many activities including judging similarities or differences among forms and symbols, remembering forms and symbols, and being able to write or talk about what i sseen. Age equivalents and/or percentile rank for the following were determined by standardized tests.

 

Visual Concentration (fine pursuits): The ability to stay on a visual task and follow through a line maze.

 

Fine Eye Movement Control (fine saccades): The ability to move the eyes from one point to another when reading or writing. (This was my dd's most difficult deficit to remediate.)

 

Reversal Frequency: The ability to determine if letters or numbers are correct or reversed.

Visual Sequential Memory: The ability to store, retain, and retrieve visual information.

 

Visual Closure: The ability to analyze visual spatial relationships so one can understand the whole picture without having to see all the parts.

 

Visual Motor Integration: The ability to integrate visual information processing skills with the fine-nmotor system in order to reproduce complex visual patterns.

 

Fine Motor Speed and Precision: The ability to use the eyes and hands together fast and accurately.

 

Auditory-Visual Integration: The ability to match an auditory beat with visual symbols for the beat.

 

Slosson Oral Reading Test (SORT): The ability to pronounce words at different levels of difficulty. Reading comprehension was not measured.
