Hello all -

I am REALLY STRUGGLING with math for my dd age 11.

My DD (age 11 - 6th grade) is VERY self motivated.

She completed TEACHING TEXTBOOKS Pre-Alg from June - Nov (by her choice !) with a 97 % average on tests.

She went onto TEACHING TEXTBOOKS Algebra I and is almost 2/3 of the way done. She has a 98 % average on tests.

I am NOT sure what to do FOR MATH next year.

She is part of Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth - however - I don't want to pay for EGPY.

I don't think TT is challenging her enough.

HOWEVER, I am not good at math - and need something she can do on her own.

Jacobs ?

TT ?

LIAL ?

Chalkdust ?

Video Textbook ?

AoPS ?

There are so many - I really don't know where to start.

I would love to find something she can do independently (which is why I chose TT) and work through.

I want to challenge her more ....

Pros/Cons to other programs...

I am ALL EARS here - PLEASE HELP !

Eva

Hi,

I am no math person either, and I am in a similar decision making process as you. My dd 10 will be doing pre-algebra/algebra this coming year. I'm still trying to decide how much more pre-algebra she needs. I have looked at past math posts for the last couple of weeks and found some good information. There seems to be a few name repeats of Jacobs, Lials etc. I think my husband and I have narrowed it down to Lial's based on other peoples comments and reviewing the material online. If you go to Pearson's education website (the publisher) you can look at their beginning algebra text online. You can see if there are any items from their table of contents and view the chapter to make sure she hasn't missed anything. The program also comes with a DVT - video CD for the computer to show them problems. I liked that component.

The other programs sound good too, but I liked the layout, the extra helps, the solution tips on the cd etc. I am still deciding, but think I may go this route.

However, many people have discussed Jacob's geometry if that's what she's ready for next and then going back to Lial's for Algebra II. Check out some posts from the last week. You could also have her take an online course. Sorry I dont know more, but hope that helps get you started in some research.

We are using Jacobs Algebra after 6 years of singapore math it is a welcome change and dd 11 is delighted. Lials college math or Jacobs general math book might be the ticket. I cannot think of the name of the general Jacobs text but know many good mathematicians on this board have used it with great success. I get tired just keeping up with her but we are shifting into abstract thought coupled with puberty and well ,maybe giving up all intoxicating vices many years ago was not such a great concept... I have also read here that many use Gelfands algebra I think from Amazon. Way too mathy for this attorney, if I could do math that well I would not have gone to law school folks it would be an MD for certain. Check those out and I will seek the title of the Jacobs book that is escaping my mind at the moment.

Teaching Textbook is not the best choice for someone who is really good at math, in our experience. My dd did that part of the year, but has also worked in Lial's. While she did most of Lial's on her own, she also needed help understanding some concepts as Lial's assumes there is a teacher. She found Jacob's boring. She started Algebra at 11, but since she hates math (figure that one out!!! Hated math and still ahead) I gave her 2 years to mosey through Algebra I. But now it's back to business. We're considering forking out money for Chalkdust. I'm not sure if it's cheaper than EPGY, but she's going to be doing Algebra II at 13 and this is not a good time for me to start teaching her math, even if she wanted me to as we have other subjects I will have to work with her more on for high school next year. Plus, she likes to argue if I don't do Algebra the same way she likes to do it and I'd rather not change my Algebraic ways at this point in my life;).

OK, I am in the same boat. My 10 y old (dd) is finishing Saxon Algebra 1/2. I have read this is more advanced than pre-algebra. What do we do next? hmmmmmmmm.

I was thinking about TT, because of the backup CD. She is quickly becoming quicker than me ...I am certain that I do not have the energy to keep up with her! But, I have read that it isn't challenging.

She is in the 99th percentile. Chalkdust? We have a promo but when we watched it she got very bored. Does the EPGY (Stanford, correct?) hold a higher standard? I am just as confused with the rest of you! Thanks, Moki4:confused:
