earthmother
We are considering a trip to Maine and the Bay of Fundy this summer and of course when researching on the internet I am inundated with places to stay, things to see, etc... Can anyone suggest nice towns to stay in right on the Bay so we can see the tidal bores? Anyone recommend a cabin to rent? places to not miss? thanks! earthmother
Blue Hen
We went to the Bay of FUNdy 6 (?) yrs ago. Just before we went Yankee Magazine had a travel article for the Bay of Fundy. We camped at a private campground in Lubec, Maine so I can't help you on the cabin. If we were to go back again I would go to: Quoddy Head State Park --- WONDERFUL hikes along the coast, and hikes into bogs. Just wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Lubec ---- we went on a whale watch into the Bay of Fundy; sightings of Bald Eagles, too many to count; seals, too many to count; and whales. It was a wonderful, wonderful day. Lubec --- Bold Coast Smoked Salmon. We still order smoked salmon from them when we want a special treat. Campobello Island --- do bring your passport or papers to travel into Canada and visit East Quoddy Lighthouse and Roosevelt's place. Eastport --- the problem with travel around the Bay of Fundy is that while something might be a mile apart as the seagull travels it will be a 50 mile drive by car. And that is the case when trying to go from Lubec to Eastport however we still went to Eastport. It was there that we watched the water flow really, really fast and waited for 3 hrs for the tide to change so we could watch it flip. Never saw it flip, and the kids were too tired and hungry to wait any longer. In Eastport we had our only good seafood meal. We found that Lubec did not have seafood to purchase, fish in the grocery store was flown in from WA! In Eastport we stopped at Raye's Mustard Mill. It was memorable. We enjoyed Lubec much more than Eastport. Eastport, IMO, was touristy while Lubec seemed more Maine. Lubec also put us close to the things we liked to do---hiking along the coast (it is sometimes a 100' drop to the sea!) and visiting lighthouses.
