Help me with history for 10th, 11th and 12th

I am trying to plan my 10th graders last 3 years of history. This is her first real year of homeschooling. In 8th grade she did a full year of American History, 9th we did Abeka's Geography. Not much history there, and was not impressed with it at all.

 

Anyway, I was looking at Mystery of History for my 7th grader and I am really liking what I see, so much I may want my 10th grader to do it too.

 

Is MOH a year long program each volumne?

 

So if she did MOH 1 for 10th, 2, for 11th and 3 for 12th grade how and where would I put in American History and Govt?

 

Any ideas? Has anyone use MOH for highschool???

I haven't used MOH but I did consider it at one point for my middle schooler but it was too lightweight for him - and I would think it would be far too lightweight for a highschooler unless you supplemented. You could add some biographies and documentaries at least. Or consider adding Teaching Company DVDs for a few of the periods.

 

Another idea would be to do MOH in 2 years instead of 3 and then do US History and Govt in the 3rd year. Or stick to doing it over 3 years and add in US Govt in the last year and claim 2 years of World History and 1 year US and 1 year Govt by the end of high school.

 

The one nice thing about using MOH is that you would have 2 kids using the same curriculum - and that is always a HUGE bonus.

You could move a little faster through the MOH books and then do a semester of American history/gov. Or do world history and american history at the same time.

Here in Fl., we can count classes taken in 8th grade as high school credit as long as they were high school equivalent material. (ie. could not use a curr. intended for middle school) Would this option work for you? It would free up a year for you.

Even tho it says it can be used for high school, and some do, I think it needs too much supplementation.

 

Have you looked at Omnibus? It's a 3 year cycle--covering Ancients, Medieval/Ren, and then a sort of combined Early Mod/Mod. It's quite easy to teach. We left off a lot of the supplemental reading, and I actually added in a few lessons from MOH 2 to the second year (to explain a little more church history). We did not do the secondary reading, for the most part, and added in a little more historical fiction to the first year (Quo Vadis, an Egyptian historical fiction book, and Ben Hur--I think that was it). Ds read the bible in a year as his devotional, and so we didn't do some of the bible reading. Anyway, if you are a Christian, it might fit for you. We used Omni 1 and 2.

 

For the 3rd year, we did Sonlight's 300--tweaked a lot. Our fourth year, we read documents of Am History and did a semester of Gov't. We linked our lit to the history all 4 years, adding in a semester of poetry and short stories our last year during the Gov't phase.

I'm looking at Notgrass World History, American History, Gov and Econ (separate courses). They are more challenging and at HS level. I hear the World History is great and the American History is pretty good. Love to hear more about the Gov and Econ classes, tho.

Thanks, We have decided to go with Notgrass. It fits perfect for the 3 years left. If I choose to do MOH with my younger one, my older can read it for pleasure!
