PinkTulip
Hi all - my son is finishing up the last chapter of Lial's BCM and I'm ready to get him started on Foerster's Algebra I. Tell me what I need: student text for sure, but what about solutions manual, and teacher's manual? Does the student text have answers to evens or odds in the back? I'm fairly confident about my ability to explain the concepts and teach, so I'm not too worried about the teacher's manual, but I would like to check my son's work without having to work all of the problems myself! Also, where is the best place (cheapest) to get these things? Amazon, direct from publisher? Finally, does it matter what edition I get? I'm assuming everything needs to match up, as far as student text, solutions manual, etc. Any ISBNs anyone can share? I know a lot of people love DVD, DVT etc., but that's not my son's style. He's more of a read the book, have the concept explained by mom, work the problems kind of kid.
Orthodox6
A great course ! We bought all the printed components for the course, including the graphic calculator workbook, directly from the publisher. Sorry no ISBNs available; we have lent the materials.
Carmen_and_Company
We own the Prentice Hall Classics edition: ISBN0-13-165708-9 We use the Home Study Companion: Algebra I CDroms from Math Without Boarders. The above link takes you to lesson samples. You can purchase an older edition of the student & TM from Follett's. I found a set on EBAY that included student text & solutions manual. I know By Way of The Family also sells student texts & solution manuals.
LaJuana
All of the Foerster's editions are compatible with the exception in early edition(s) of a chapter on Basic computer language. You can make do with mixing editions if you must. Here is the list of the ISBNs I have on file for all of the Foerster's Algebra I editions. If anyone knows the ISBNs of the missing Solutions Manuals, I would appreciate you sharing them. Foerster's Algebra I Teacher's Edition: 1998/9 ("Classic Edition") - 0201324598 1994 - 0201860953 1990 - 0201250748 1984 - 0201202433 Solutions Manual: 1998/9 -0201861003 1994 - 1990 - 1984 - 0201202441 Student Text: 1998/9 - 020132458X 1994 - 0201860945 1990 - 020125073X 1984 - 0201202425 hth

Matryoshka
Thanks for this from me, too! We have about another year to go till Algebra, but I already have the Foerster's text and TM that I got used. Have you all had to buy the Solutions manual directly from the publisher? This intimidates me for some reason - how do I go about it? Do I have to call them or set up some kind of account? Or if I keep looking, might I get lucky at a used book place (since I have a year)? Oh, and what is this Graphic Calculator workbook? I have no idea how to use a Graphic Calculator; I'm thinking this might be a good idea to get. Is there an ISBN for that?

Does that say $72 for just the solutions manual??! :svengo: I paid something between $10-$15 each for the student text and TM, in like-new condition! I'm guessing the price from the publisher is similar? (but please tell me it isn't...)
Dani n Monies Mom
The price from Prentice was about $45 or so. But that was last year. Ava

Ugh - I just went to the site and I can't find Foerster's Algebra at all. Am I not looking in the right place?? Don't tell me they've stopped selling it... Anyone have an old Solutions manual they're not using anymore?? :D
Dani n Monies Mom
It was difficult for me to find too. I'll search it out and post it for you if I can find it again... Sorry about that, I ordered it from OASIS. You'll have to create an account with them, which was easy, but took several days. Here's the ISBN info: 0201861003 FOERSTER ALGEBRA 1 SOLUTION MANUAL 42.97 That was in August of '09. After you log in, you can click the 'Place an Order' tab, then click 'Quick Order'. From there you can put in the ISBN number and quantity and hit 'Buy'. This will place it in a cart with the description. You can then logout until you are ready to purchase, or proceed with the checkout. Shipping took a long time; about 6-8 weeks. Kathie in VA
I just ordered Foerster's text and solution manual. see post http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157079&page=3 Basically, I was looking to get copies of both Lial's and Foersters to compare without breaking the bank. I got Lial's text and solutions manuals used from Amazon for about $2.00 each plus $3.99 each in shipping. I got Foerster's text used from Abebooks for about $5 including shipping and I got the Foerster's solution manual from Pearsons (via Oasis) for $42. I did need register with Oasis. Their form includes classifying myself as a homeschooler so that was easy. They they wanted me to sign that I wouldn't give my students solution manuals. It did take a day or two to get this all cleared but then the order went through. It arrived pretty quick too. Funny, both the solution's manuals arrived but the texts didn't yet! :001_huh: hth, Kathie
TeaTotaler
Here is the link to the page at Pearson where you can find the ISBNs for the latest edition. I still have not figured out how to link directly so here it is. Hopefully it will work. The Pearson website is not the easiest to navigate. http://www.pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PSZ16d&PMDBSUBCATEGORYID=&PMDBSITEID=2781&PMDBSUBSOLUTIONID=&PMDBSOLUTIONID=6724&PMDBSUBJECTAREAID=&PMDBCATEGORYID=806&PMDbProgramId=21022 HTH Hi all - my son is finishing up the last chapter of Lial's BCM and I'm ready to get him started on Foerster's Algebra I. As much as it burns me to spend 4x as much on the solutions manual than I spent on either the text or TM, I guess I'll have to and be grateful I got the other two at reasonable prices. Someone else mentioned the Graphing Calculator book that goes with it. Is that helpful? I'm not a fan of calculators, but I figure they (and I) have to figure out this Graphing Calculator thing at some point - it's so pervasive! TeaTotaler
You are welcome. I'd like to know about the Graphing Calculator book too. So far I have only purchased the Student Bk and Solns Manual. I'm thinking about getting the Math without Borders DVDs. Thank you! angela in ohio
I bought a copy of the student text from abe or amazon (can't remember which) for under $5, including shipping. We have used that this year. The answers to half the problems are in the back, and that has been enough. We have the DVDs from Math Without Borders that we watch for some chapters, and I work the problems myself and check them with dd (she does better than I do, as I make dumb mistakes quite often :D) and the back of the book. We spent the money we saved on buying it all and buying new on some Econ books we wanted. :001_smile: They were worth the extra effort I have to make to check her work. I think I'm up to working through most mistakes - I admit the place I'll start to get fuzzy is factoring polynomials and the quadratic equation - I'm pretty sure I can still do those, but efficiently enough to spot the errors so it doesn't take me forever? But the Foersters is for my mathier twin - maybe she won't make so many errors? :tongue_smilie: I am definitely planning on the Math without Borders CDs - glad to hear so many positive endorsements! LaJuana
is in the time saved going over my children's work. That made it well worth having a TE. I've only used the Solutions Manual when both my dc and I are stuck, and usually one of us has a clue where to go in a problem. If things start to get fuzzy for you at factoring polynomials and quadratic equations, you might consider getting some kind of answer key. Those concepts are covered early in the course: Chapters 5 and 6 out of 14. :001_smile:
Kareni
Funny, both the solution's manuals arrived but the texts didn't yet! :001_huh: I was thinking how so often in life we have questions but no answers. Is the reverse any better? Regards, Kareni

This reminds me of "42" the answer to life the universe and everything! :D BTW: the Lial's solution manual is 3x bigger then Foersters! okay so the font is a little bigger, but not that much. --Kathie
