nukeswife
We recently moved to Chesapeake. We are, yes as you may have guessed, a Navy family. :) Anyone out there in this area?
Tara from Florida
Just had to respond because my daughter was born in Norfolk, although we live in Florida now. I was AD/AF at Langley, but resigned my commission just before DD was born. I encourage you to check out the Marine Science Museum (OK I think they have changed the name but it is the one in VA Beach). We still maintain current membership as we go back, usually once a year, and spend a vast majority of our time there when in the area. It's a super take, and better than any other I have visited. What does your DH do? Will he be in port most of the time or will he be out to sea a lot? I know that going it alone can be tough. My DH was in medical school when we were there and after my DD was born it didn't feel much different that if he had been on remote:rolleyes: Hope you get some local responses. Enjoy you time there. nukeswife
Tara, We've lived here twice before for some reason they never seem to leave us here, it's been 1 tour here then go somewhere for 1 tour then back here. LOL We're hoping ot stay here for a while this time. A while being more than 1 tour. We do like it here and we've been to the Aquarium in VA beach once but I'm not sure about the marine science museum. I'll have to check and see if it's the same thing or different. We have done the Living history museum and air and space center up in the Hampton/NN area. We're hoping to finally get to the zoo this year and check it out, we've heard it's really nice. My dh is a LCDR and he's currently with one of the strike groups up here. He'll be in and out for the most of this year. Most likely will be gone for April and May and then a deployment in early 2009. We've been married 10 years so we're used to him being gone. It's tough but we actually have "navy friends" that are about 20 miles from us we knew way back when we only had 1 child so we've known them a while and she hs's their kids too. Hopefully we'll find some other locals soon. Where in FL are you, we just came back here from Jacksonville. Nice place but the heat got to us this time (dh and I grew up in IA and WI)? Tara from Florida
Sounds like you are home again. Funny isn't it that when you are AD for 10+ years you tend to cycle around to seeing some of the same people over again. I was AD for 10 too. I was a JAG specializing primarily in health care law, international law (LOAC and Geneva Convention stuff so I was the one who gave all the ROE briefings for those deploying) and environmental law. Occasionally I was tapped for AAI (air craft accident investigations) but was fortunate enough to always be involved in cases where there were no fatalities. I think the museum and the aquarium are one and the same but that they changed the name. It is a great place to go. We also loved the "big food" at the MacArthur center, especially for the younger ones as it provided a safe environment to play indoors when the weather was too hot or too wet. Aside from parking costs (and you could park in areas other than the pay garage) it is free. We loved Harborside, going to the beaches and all. The zoo has really improved over the last 8 years and is a great place to visit. It is also worthy of membership consideration for families as the cost is about what 2 visits would normally run. We lived on Willoughby Spit since I traveled to Langley (against the traffic) and my DH was going to medical school and then residency at EVMS. Seemed to be a good location as far as commuting was concerned but not the best place once we started raising a family. DH occasionally had rotations at the VA (that's where his internship outpatient practice was) and the Navy hospital. The new Navy hospital is really quite fantastic. Our house on the Spit looked out over the Little Bay toward the Navy Base. The first time they had an air show I was convinced we were under attack because of all the fire and flames! We are currently in SW Florida in Ft. Myers, but one of my best friends (also a former AF JAG) lives in Jacksonville. We usually do a stop over at her place when we are on a road trip to Virginia. My kids actually like hurricanes as it usually means we pack up school and head for VA, with a stop off at Disney on the way home! We just have to check and make sure what ever weather system we are running from isn't following us up there The last time we went we stayed with some friends of ours who just moved to a new home in Winslow and are raising alpaca. They also homeschool, so a good time is had by all. I would recommend getting in touch with her if you are interested, but they are quite a ways from HR for regular contact. Her DH was also Navy (He's a doctor like my DH) and her twins were born in Iceland while he was stationed there. Where else have you been stationed? I was in Vegas at Nellis, Osan (in Korea), Andrews AFB (DC) and then finally at Langley. Hope someone else gets in touch with you so you can have a local contact. I wasn't homeschooling at the time (we left when DD was 2) so I'm not sure what type of support groups may exist. I have one friend who lives near Granby who homeschools, but she is always traveling so is almost impossible to get in touch with. Have a great weekend. He went through there the last class that they put through a 3 year cycle instead of 4. I loved visiting him there, but he moved after he finished school and had kids. My dad was Chief of Staff at the VA hospital before he went AD Navy. After a tour in Puerto Rico, they sent him to Iceland. The military really does have sense of humor. :D
mrscopterdoc
Do you have any info to share about local homeschool groups? {You can email me if you would like.} I've been looking online for months now and cannot seem to find anything in that area! I'm starting to get anxious about moving there and not having any local homeschool support.
Colleen in SEVA
We live in NE Suffolk. There is actually a HUGE homeschooling population here, including many families using WTM. Almost everyone we know here homeschools, including 5 out of 6 families in our social circle. There are 5 homeschooling families in DH's company, and at least 4 in my neighborhood. There are a dozen or so different homeschooling co-ops that I know of, and many homeschooler-friendly museums! We have a monthly WTM Moms support group meeting on the second Monday of each month, currently meeting at the B&N on Greenbriar Parkway. Our yahoo group is here http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheWellTrainedMindinHamptonRoads/ The largest local online support group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/homeschooling-in-hamptonroads/ . You will find a WIDE variety of homeschoolers there, and there are hundreds of posts each week. Our local homeschool supply store is in Chesapeake area also. http://www.mooreexpressions.com/index.htm If you would like to e-mail me directly, my address is cpoteat at gmail dot com. What part of Chesapeake are you in? You are either 5 minutes or 40 minutes from me.
HootyTooty
We live on the Peninsula. We've lived here for about 8 years now and love the area. Sometimes I think every one is on the southside.
