Beans - soup, spices, recipe?? Help, please.

A few times a year I make a pot of beans. Many times I flavor the broth (after soaking and rinsing, etc) with beef flavor and toss in onion... sometimes a bit of bacon... sometimes a pork roast bone with leftover meat on it...

 

Each time, though my kids enjoy it all right and I think it is tasty, it just doesn't taste good to dh.

 

He bought a bunch of dried beans recently and tried looking for a bean soup flavor packet. He is sure that the flavor packet is just the thing. I cannot find a bean soup flavor packet, either.

 

Does anyone have a recipe??

What kind of beans are you talking about? I like them all seasoned a bit differently. :)

 

Those flavor packets are usually loaded with MSG - that's why dh's brain is saying they taste so good!

it calls for canned beans - I would soak a bag of black beans overnight and double the recipe (or only use half the bag).

I put in bacon and an onion when I start the beans cooking. Toward the end of cooking (like the last 30 minutes) I add a can of mild ro-tel (drained), close to a tablespoon of chili powder, a teaspoon of salt (you can always add more at the end if needed), a teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 a teaspoon white pepper, 1/2 a teaspoon cumin and a few shakes of Louisiana Hot Sauce. I know a lot of people use garlic too but I don't like the flavor of garlic or garlic powder in pinto beans and neither does my dh (even though I use garlic in *lots* of recipes).

 

eta: meet me in paris has a good point. I assumed you were talking about pinto beans because of the bacon. But I also looove to make black beans or lentils. I cook these completely differently than pinto beans.
