My DD took it at a driving school, but DS would rather do it at home (he wants to go ahead and do it and not wait until summer). He already has his permit, and has logged more than the required hours (DH requires twice as many as the state). We live in VA, if that makes a difference. Thank you! dkholland Posted February 18, 2010 Share Posted February 18, 2010 Amy, My ds took the driversed.com online course. We actually bought it at a very reduced price from the Homeschool buyers co-op. It gets the book work portion done in a self-paced course. You receive a certificate when it is completed. It also keeps track of time spent on each section, and in order to pass a section you have to have spent a certain amount of time doing it. The in-the-car portion can be taught by a parent according to VA law. We recieved the "Module 11" from Vdot and my husband was supposed to teach it to my son....but it is not very user friendly. it basically gives objectives, and you have to figure out how to teach those things. not good for a dad who does not teach at all! We may end up paying for someone else to teach the car portion. most we have found run from $250-$350 just for the in car portion. She had no problems with it - the course ran smoothly. All the text material is online, along with the quizzes and tests. She was assigned a tutor to keep track of her progress, though I don't recall that my daughter actually needed to ask her anything. After completion of the course (a certain minimum % was required on the testing), she was issued the certificate that the DMV must see in order to approve behind-the-wheel training. We did that part at home with the Module 11 that dkholland mentioned. And LOL, to say it's not user friendly is an understatement! But we did many, many hours of supervised driving with dd, many more than necessary to log. mcconnellboys Posted February 19, 2010 Share Posted February 19, 2010 Our state has a program that new drivers must attend. I believe that it's exactly the same program that is offered to traffic offenders in lieu of having points added to their licenses, from what my older son told me about it when he took it. This is in addition to any other education program they may take, however. You might want to contact your car insurance company for recommendations of good programs offered for your state (different states require different types of programs).
