eclecticmom
We're going to try Spelling Workout next year. I'm thinking about starting my daughter, who will be in 3rd grade and is an average speller, on Level B. Does this sound right? My son is a advanced speller, will be in 5th grade next year, and is currently in Level F of Spelling Power. Should I start him in Level E? Is there a placement test? SilverMoon
I'd put the third grader in C, and the fifth grader in E, or F if I thought he could go up a grade. They're right on for grade level in my experience, not advanced.
tinkgumby
I'm not sure about a placement test, but I definitely wouldn't go below C for your daughter. My son, who is also 3rd grade and also an average speller, is just about right for C. I put my 2nd grade son in B, and it is TOO easy for him. MelanieM
My 7 yr old daughter just started SWO C, and she's finding it very easy. When I looked at samples for level B I figured she'd already know all of those words and might find it too boring. As it is, I think she'll be moving into D before very long. I would say she's a pretty average speller, but she seems to pick up new words with very little effort. If you look on Christianbook.com you can see the first lesson of each level. Check the word lists and see which level seems the better fit. If C seems too challenging, start with B and maybe move through the first lessons quickly until you find a lesson that meets your needs. DarlaS
My 6 yo is using B and finding it easy. If I hadn't gotten a deal on the set for $5, I would have placed him into C. As it is we're moving through it pretty quickly.
Tidbits of Learning
All of these comments about SWO B is making me nervous. I bought it for my upcoming 2nd grader for next year. I have gotten in my D and E for my older girls but B was backordered. I like the looks of D and E a lot. I bought D for my 4th grader and E for my 5th grader. My dd will be an upcoming 5th grader using it at grade level. They're out there! My 6 yo is just a freakishly good speller. I just wouldn't use it a year behind unless you're either planning to accelerate through it, or your child is a below grade level speller. Annie Laurie
Here's an article on the WTM site that says to start a 3rd grade, good speller in SWO D and a 3rd grade, poor speller in C. Also says to start a 5th grade, good speller in F. Double check the chart and make sure I didn't type that wrong though. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/older-child/
