IQ testing or explore/act/sat - pros, cons

Recommended Posts

Has your child taken an IQ test? Was it helpful? How old were they when you did it?

Or is an explore/act/sat more helpful for planning and assessing potential?

After looking into standardized tests and the other post discussion, these tests often do not tell us what we really need to know and I'm deciding whether or not to administer them after this year and try one of the others.

Calvin was IQ tested when he was five. He was still in school, and the results helped us decide to home educate him. Hobbes has not been tested - we don't feel the need. Both boys just took UK standardised tests and scored well above average with few gaps. That's all we need to know right now.

Best wishes

Both of my older children have taken IQ tests. They were newly 6 at the time. It was helpful for *ME* because I needed to know that what they were doing wasn't typical. It was not particularly helpful to them, although they did enjoy the experience.

If your child is older than 10 or so then the Explore/ACT/SAT route would probably give you good information. I would not recommend an IQ kids over 10 because there isn't enough room at the top to get a clear picture.

Good luck!

I haven't had my kids take IQ tests. The only standardized test we do are the B.C. FSA test (Foundation Skills Assessment) in grades 4 and 7. Our province requires homeschoolers to write it. DD12 did it in 4th and was above average and DD9 and DD12 did it this year for 7th and 4th grades. I haven't got the results but I'm sure they did fine.

I know where my kids are at and don't really see a need for them to be tested.

When I administer the Iowa test, I also give them the cognitive abilities test (CogAt). While it isn't and IQ test, it does somewhat correspond to an IQ. It is enough information for me. What I have found interesting is how much it has varied for my dd - about a 25 point difference from her lowest to highest score.
