SkiMom
Can anyone give me a review of BJU math-for Pre-Algebra and up? I've done a search on the board and haven't been able to find much information. Thanks!
Susan C.
I use it. I like the Prealgebra (don't need dvds for this if you can teach it a little). I also like the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, all with dvds. The precalculus gets the job done, but it is light, and the pace is slow. chalkboard
We are using BJU Alg. 1 this year and have found it to be very much to our liking. I have found the instructions in the textbooks to be adequate, although I do have an Alg. DVD series on hand (Jason Gibson) that we use for extra reenforcement. I also have the BJU PreAlgebra book and by the looks of that book, I wish we would've used it also. If we could afford the BJU DVD math course I would use it. Student can complete the Alg. 1 course in a basic, average, or advanced fashion, by following the suggested assignments for each lesson. What has been helpful for us is that most of the problems in each lesson relate to the concept(s) that was just presented. There are always a few problems at the end of each lesson for cumulative review. I think the book is light on word problems, though. You can look at a sample lesson on the BJU website. We have also used the Student Activity Book to give some extra practice with problems. The regular text includes a page of math in Scripture at the end of each chapter, and there are also lessons periodically on probability and statistics. This is in the Alg. 1 book, I mean. Answers are in the TEacher edition. Many of them are written out as would be in a solutions manual. Susan
readwithem
We used Bob Jones through Alg. 2. I've read PreCalculus has some huge errors but they may have updated the book. My dd has done online classes for PreCalc and Calculus. My dd did extremely well on both the math of the SAT 1 and the SAT math subject test, most of which she learned through BJUP. Cinder
This is our first year using BJU--ds is in a small private school that uses mostly BJU. The school uses BJU for math from 7th grade through Alg II, then they switch to Prentice-Hall for Pre-calc. I'm not sure what they use for calculus. I'm not sure of the reason for switching to PH--I just haven't asked that question yet. Cinder
Lolly
Dd15a is using BJu for Alg 1 this year. We have the dvd's but don't have the time to use them for math. (Just not enough time in the day to do as many of their dvd's as we would like.) The book explanations are enough. So far, it is a good fit for her.
