Omnibus III likes/dislikes? Also VP online...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm considering Ominbus III for my 9th grader in the fall.

How did your dc like Omnibus III?

How much time did dc spend a day on it?

Is a weekly schedule given or did you have to come up with something? Did you use only Primary sources or substitute secondary?

On hs transcript, what did you write for Omni III?

Anyone taken Omni III thru' VP Scholars Online? Is it worth the $$$?

I like the idea someone else is grading the course and keeping dc on track. I would love to know your experience online and teacher recommendations.

Thanks SO much! Entering hs is a bit confusing!

Feel a bit like a broken record here, but I will just say that dd loves her Omnibus III online class. She took I and II previously, also online. She is pursuing a VP academy diploma, so we take many of their online classes, and for us it is worth the money. It seemed we really focused on World History in her grammar stage. Somehow we missed quite a bit of American History. So I'm glad that she's getting a really excellent year of it right now. Like you, I love the idea that she is responsible to another teacher. She does more work for them than she would have done for me! And I love the more objective grading. (I am harder on my dc than others). We have not had a bad teacher at Veritas. Quite the contrary; they have all been excellent. Right now she has Bruce Etter, and Christi Goeser. (Primary and secondary, respectively). I could never have gotten through all the suggested reading with her. She pushes hard in these classes, and is getting an excellent education. They just put their 2010/2011 class schedule up, and are starting registration, so your timing is perfect. You can also sit in on a current class if you want to get a feel for how they do things.

Best of luck, jackie

This was out first year with on-line classes (at VP or elsewhere). DS had Omnibus I and II at a local Classical School and we went "public" for Omnibus III year......

but we're back home and stayed track and went on to IV.

Anyway, I have really liked it...especially the thought of keeping up with the reading and accountability.....

However, if you asked my 16 year old son, he hasn't liked it as much as I have :) He doesn't hate it...but certainly not his preference. He likes the teachers and classroom set-up fine....he is just not keen about getting on the microphone and talking with a lot of "strangers" (students he doesn't know) ....some kids it doesn't bother at all....but my son is reserved, and it's been a struggle. Although he listens and takes notes well, I personally think he is a little disengaged from the class mentally, because he does not want to "share" and participate in the live class discussion (he did this in public school as well, though at the small private school, we couldn't get him to be quiet).

So, I know in one of his classes, hardly anyone talks at all. So, I think a lot of it has to do with your child's personality to determine if this will be a good experience for him/her. I realize this is just my child and not any reflection whatsoever on the quality of the classes, teachers, or Veritas.....personally, I love it.

IN the end, we will be doing two more on line classes next year though!

Like Jackie we are full time diploma, and this was dd's first time foray into Omni or classical education.

She is taking III this yr and loving it. She is always worried about her assignments, but finishes them on time and gets good grades to boot.

What is funny is she is not a big talker on mic, but chats in the box. She is very social and loves the class interaction. She might sit back and watch more than others, but she loves it.

She already has her courses picked out for next year, as you can see we are big VP fans.

It's great to hear you all have liked the VP online Omni classes.

-Can you tell me about home many hours per day does your dc commit to VP Omni studies? I gathered from their website 1 semester is primary reading and second sememster is secondary reading? Is that correct?

-Do you give 1 credit for a semester of VP online or 1/2?? This is all new to me! LOL!!

-I *think* dd is a very good writer, but she is a little less confident of her abilites, are the VP teachers aware of student ages (dd is 14) and take that into account when grading essays?

-Any teachers you would recommend for a first time VP online student??

I am very tempted to sign dd up, just wish it wasn't SO expensive!!!

Thanks so much,

Sangita

That is not correct. Primaries are one class that meets throughout the year (2 classes, 3 hours total a week), and secondaries the same. For example, this year, Ds has primaries M/W from 8:30am - 11:00am and then his secondaries class is M/W from 1:00pm-2:30pm. That is all year.

So both classes run at the same time. Omnibus is set up that way according to the schedule, even if you do it at home. Often, the primaries and secondaries are designed to "line up" with related ideas/time period.

If you take both classes, primaries and secondaries, you will end up at the end of the year with 1 credit of literature, 1 credit of history/social studies and 1 credit of theology/bible. However, they do not teach "writing." We take a class from the IEW rep here locally, and I combine her grade and the secondaries grade for 1 credit of English.

That I really don't know. Most of the comments on submitted papers we have had are not on content but on grammar/structure/etc. One teacher grades really easy, and the other grades really hard. Just a difference in teachers.

I think Bruce Etter is teaching III this coming year (the schedule is up on line as of yesterday)....we have not personally had him, but have three friends whose children had him and thought he was great. They also had Toby Sumpter and thought he was great. The others I don't know anything about them. But we have been pleased with all 3 teachers we have had this year.

We are not doing an online class but we are doing Omni III. It's very good. I am finding it an extensive government study so I added a little modern "government rules" and am calling it her 1 year Government credit. Our public schools do Government for a full year. It's excellent. Great discussions and book choices.
