tdeveson
I'd like to supplement our study of the French Revolution and Napoleon with a couple of movies. Can you recommend something appropriate for an almost-eleven year old boy who loves history?

abreakfromlife
thumbs down on the 1939 movie of Marie Antoinette, LOL. This might be a little young for him, but Time Warp Trio, a cartoon Discovery channel show, has a dvd with an episode with Napoleon.
Mrs Mungo
Mrs Mungo, what version of Tale of Two Cities do you recommend? I like the 1935 version with Basil Rathbone. Maybe it's not the most complete but it's a decent re-telling. I know there is a BBC mini-series version but I haven't seen it, maybe someone else has? You could also show the "parrot version" from Monty Python, it's only one scene but it's fun if you have the shows on dvd (like I do, lol)-it's in the Attila the Hun show. tdeveson
Thank you, all. I've sent for some of these from Netflix.
Mrs Mungo
Thank you, all. I've sent for some of these from Netflix. I really love Horatio Hornblower. I think everyone should read these before attempting Les Mis. You'll have a much better understanding of the Napoleonic wars. :001_smile:
EmilyK
When I think of Horatio Hornblower, I think of Sharpe too -- I love them but has anyone watched them with kids?
Jane in NC
What about Ridley Scott's film The Duellists? It is a beautifully filmed story of honor at all cost, based on a Joseph Conrad story. You can read about it here. Granted, it is an older film but a library may have it.

Sharpe may not be appropriate for an eleven year old. The books and their film adaptations have some rather gruesome rape scenes.
Guest Dulcimeramy
I watched several episodes of Horatio Hornblower on youtube last night. My interest may have had more to do with Ioan Gruffudd than Napoleonic Wars, I'm not sure. Will have to do more research.
