Trying to plan literature for pre- high school

Recommended Posts

Our youngest wants to be accelerated into high school come next Aug or September (depending where we are living:)). She is well on her way through LL7 and still has the Helen Keller book and All Creatures Great and SMall to read. Once she has done that, and even to some extent at the same time, I would like to assign more reading to make up for eighth grade. Any literature suggestions of works that should be read before ninth grade?

My son is doing parts of LL7 and LL8 both this year (8th grade). Are you interested in just going into LL8? There are some good books there.

May I ask how you're combining these? My lit plans for this year are kind of in disarray (we were doing a monthly book discussion group a la Teaching the Classics, but two out of four families backed out), and I was looking at either LL7 or 8 for next year (7th). Are you just picking the books you or your ds like best?

Well, each book is really an independent unit. I talked with other parents on these boards & the yahoo group, and they encouraged me that I could pick & choose.

I just planned the first two units last summer and got a sense of things. Since then I just go with my instincts as to what unit ds will do next. We started LL7 with the first three chapters (short story, Tom Sawyer, poetry), then moved over to LL8 for A Christmas Carol, then back to LL7 for a short story, and now he's doing LL8 Treasure Island. I want him to do The Hobbit, A Day of Pleasure (autobio of Isaac Bashevis Singer), and some more short stories/poetry. I've been debating on the Alice unit but I'm getting convinced that he should know that story.

Since I have an 8th grader, I do the LL7 chapters faster than scheduled in the teacher manual. I do the LL8 chapters as scheduled.

HTH,

Julie

Thanks! Is there a big jump in difficulty inbetween the levels - could I still mix and match with 7th graders?

I'm pondering doing LLLOTR in 8th, so I thought doing the Hobbit in 7th would be good.

I haven't noticed that the LL chapters are harder... you could ask over on the Hewitt Homeschooling yahoo group, where Elizabeth answers directly.

The books are read at a faster clip in LL8. More books are covered in a year than with LL7.

Basically, the student starts with an intro in the LL book, then he read-read-reads (and if you wish, you can use vocab, comprehension questions, and discussion questions), then he does lessons & worksheets (which my son says are spoilers so you can't do them earlier). So the read-read-read weeks could be spread out a little longer, depending on your student's reading speed.

The K12 Literary Analysis and Composition (of which we only use the literature) is listed for 8th grade on their website (and, hence, you can use it independently), but it is actually a 9th grade course in that they use *exactly* the same course in their high school. I'm finding it to be a good bridge for my 8th grader who is generally working at a high school level (and will be getting high school credit for several courses this year).
