periwinkle Posted March 20, 2008 Share Posted March 20, 2008 My oldest ds is having his Eagle Court of Honor next week, but he turned 18 last month and is no longer officially a Scout (although he is a member of the Venturing Crew). We have been fed so many conflicting reports about what he should wear to his court of honor ceremony. One individual said he could wear his Boy Scout uniform with the green epaulets for Venturing, but I just read on a website this is a no-no. He is not a leader. Anyone know the correct uniform? My dh is only a Cubmaster as my son is still a Webelos, but he said that he should wear his Boy Scout uniform with the red epaulets. I agree with him but like I said, we are only in Cub Scouts. kate in seattle Posted March 21, 2008 Share Posted March 21, 2008 My son is in the same position (actually, we are waiting to hear back from Eagle Board that his project passed) but he has turned 18 during the waiting. He told me he had to have a plain Scout shirt (no red tabs for him as he is not a Venturer) no badges, no sash with merit badges (though we could display that on the table, etc.) no 50 mile, no patrol insignia. does that jive with anything you have heard? kate in seattle Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yes, the conclusion we are coming to is that he can wear his BS uniform, although I will have to strip the shirt of its patches/badges (which is silly, I think!) and without sash (we will put this on the display table). And since green Venturing epaulets are not correct, the only remaining question is red epaulets or none? I am very proud of him. This has been a long haul and especially tough because we are in a somewhat newer troop (he is only the 2nd Eagle!), so his dad and I have really had to act as mentors and ferret out correct information/protocol from our council. The Court of Honor is also stressful because we are planning the entire ceremony and reception. I hope I can relax and enjoy the evening, but I think I will just exhale a big sigh of relief when it is over;) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If he could, maybe it would be worth paying the $10, or whatever it is, to not have to strip everything off! LOL After reading this, I was thinking back on when a boy we know got his Eagle and was over 18 - he wore everything. Maybe it just depends on your troop/council how strict they are on this? Dh (a Scout Executive) says because he earned his Eagle rank while a member of a troop (and before he turned 18 of course), he can proudly wear his khaki shirt (including the red epaulets) for his Eagle court of honor. If this weren't so, many boys would have to wear a shirt and tie for their COH's because they would not have stayed registered in any capacity after turning 18, but before their COH's. He can wear the whole banana and if anyone says anything, he can ask, "But, are YOU an Eagle?":glare: Just kidding on that one, but he can wear his uniform. No need to rip anything. As far as the epaulets, he can choose, I believe. Is his Venturing crew more near and dear to him that his Scout troop? Wear green. Does he want to honor the contributions of the troop that helped him up the Path? Wear red; and do you see my bias?:001_smile: A side note; I saw a troop do something really cool. When the Webelos crossed over, the Eagles from the troop took off their red tabs, signed the inside, and gave them to the new boys. This was done to encourage them to earn their OWN Eagle tabs and to let them know the older boys were there for them. My middle son was past 18 at his Court. He wore his uniform, and red tabs. When he went to a meeting the next week, as an Asst. Scoutmaster, he took off all the insignia, except the ones he could keep (Eagle and religious ribbon, Arrow of Light, troop numbers) and neckerchief. Congratulations to all!
