College Algebra Clep- advice, please. Which levels of HS math needed?

Recommended Posts

Hi:

We're homeschoolers finishing up high school. I was thinking of having my daughter take the CLEP test for College Algebra. Can anybody tell me which levels of HS math are needed? We're finishing Algebra 2. Is Trig necessary before taking the test? I'm not sure what is included in a college algebra course.

Thanks for any help,

Jackie

The College Board website has the content information you are seeking.

Be careful, however; not every college gives credit for all CLEPs. Further, College Algebra is an amorphous beast. Many universities expect students to begin their math sequences with precalculus which does include trig. Credit is not always awarded at the university level for college algebra. You really need to check with the college.

Colleges that I'm aware of have the student take a math placement test prior to enrolling. My oldest took it when she started CC, then took it again when she transferred after moving. She just took another math placement test for the University even though she's currently enrolled in Calc III. Is there some benefit to taking the CLEP test I'm not aware of?

If you used a very rigorous Algebra 2 program then your student might do OK on the test--but unless they are a 'natural' at math they probably would not CLEP out of it.

College Algebra is the lowest level of math class accepted by most colleges/uinversities for credit towards a degree. It is usually combined with Trigonometry as part of a Pre-Calc program.

College Algebra reviews Algebra 2 and then continues on with more work--especially in the areas of functions and matrics.

Another less common name for College Algebra is 'Algebra 3'. It is a one semester course--even at the high school level.

CLEP tests are accepted at some colleges and universities for credit. The advantage is much less cost per credit and saved time. However, even departments within colleges vary in whether or not they will accept CLEP tests for credit, so passing a CLEP test does not guarantee credit.
