Laurel Springs School (different from Laurel Tree) offers 80 courses on the web...

http://www.laurelsprings.com/web-based-courses

Art of Problem Solving

They offer all kinds of math courses up to Calculus...

I understand the courses are for people with facility in math but I have no personal experience.

Kinetic books for physics

This is online in that the problems are corrected online and the material is online. But there does not seem to be a personal instructor...

Torrey Academy (high school classes online from Biola University; very highly recommended) http://youth.biola.edu/academics/torrey/

http://www.homeschoolscienceacademy.com/OnlineClasses.htm

http://www.alexandriatutorials.com (also highly recommended; Matthew Turnbull's History of Christianity was my dd's favorite class last year. She's an excellent student, so that is saying a lot.)

Also the Open Enrollment program is open for Prealgebra and Intro. to Algebra. The group, including students on WTM and another board I am on, have over 100 students using the OE program. (Math is K-Intro. to Algebra) Search EPGY for information.

In my new AARP Bulletin there is a nice article about The New U.: How to Learn Anything Online for Free...Browsing this article I see taht they wish to link to their online copy of the article:

http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourworld/reinventing/articles/freelearning.html

It has some good links to Academic Earth, ResearchChannel, Videolectures.net and more. It says MIT offers free online courses...and gives some good info about getting started.

The article refers to Open Culture which is a source for all kinds of free cultural and educational media...I just peeked at it and the first page lists 250 free online courses....I followed the links in a search for Statistics and easily got to an MIT free course. Lots of stuff relevant for my son taking AP Statistics.

These ones I looked at briefly, all need further exploring:

videolectures.net

openculture.com

forum-network.org

Okay, okay, I gotta get back to www.wonderhowto.com

I think this is going to be an all-nighter on this site alone.

Gwen, is there a different page or website for the Honors course? Or is it no longer offered? I followed the link above but can only see info on the AP course.

TIA,

It would be wonderful if Josie would publish the whole list intact, with everyone's additions. Then we can all copy it, or know we can search for it when we need it. This is very valuable! Thanks for the thread.:)

~Brigid

You can always subscribe to this thread so you will always be able to find it. Someone else PMed me and ask that I do this and list the class/topics covered for each online class, but I can't do that right now.

Sorry.

This is fantastic! Thanks for posting.

Sure, Sandra,

The AARP comes to my husband: although I was born in 1956, I'm really only about 27, since I started counting backwards when I hit 40. Just wanted to clarify that.

The good thing about a published article like this, is that all the links are active.

Has anyone used online schools for English Comp or Pre-Calulus? Mostly, concerned with teaching Pre-Cal..:glare: We have used Teaching Textbooks in the past, but he would benefit from the discussion between teacher/student. Good math teachers are usually full of tips and more practice problems if needed. I thought finding a good online school might be better than a tutor.

Please only suggest a school if you have had a personal experience..

Thanks

Just found this post, thought I'd add my cents.....

Veritas Press Scholars Academy ....very happy with their classes. We've enrolled again this fall for several classes.

Landry Academy.....will be taking one class this fall, I'll post how well it goes.

We will also be trying Potters School for computer classes.

I think it's great to have a thread with online classes listed, especially from experienced families, to make it easier to "shop around" for classes that parents may want to "farm out". :001_smile:

We HAVE taken classes and we love Landry Academy! Their class lists just gets more and more impressive and the teachers are top notch. There is a huge discount through tomorrow for 2012-13 classes if anyone is interested.

Patrick Henry College has some courses available online

UCCP has a number of open course style courses for high school, including AP prep level courses. You would need to add tests to what is in their open offerings. There isn't a teacher, but everything for the courses other than assessments seems to be laid out.

Jetstream, an online weather course from NOAA.

I didn't see Cybershala mentioned. Singapore math & science classes for K - college level. We are having a great time with our tutor, Rachna. She does CWP on Monday & Friday mornings with dd8 (while I'm doing math with dd7).

http://www.Cybershala.com

A free demo class is available upon request. Classes are held in an Adobe Acrobat whiteboard classroom with 'live' audio & video. $10/hour.

The folks at Cybershala are delightful. We don't have any trouble with the language issues that some have reported. Rachna's Indian accent is not a hinderance to dd's learning.

Keystone Online High School is very nice. I took a full course load with them this year. I took honors and AP classes. The AP classes were good and you learned a lot but had a lot of work. If you spread the work out evenly, its 3 assignments a week with about a chapters worth of reading. It really teaches you everything.:D

For Apologia science classes:

redwagontutorials.com

They also offer prerecorded classes via mp3 download and flash drives. Dd14 is enrolled in Biology live feed class this year

Lisa

Actually, I happily discovered Apologia Academy today! The same people who make apologia science now offer live and recorded online classes. They also offer Bible and world view courses as well.

I'm thinking about scheduling in their chemistry classes for next year. I would love to know if anyone has used them before.

The online discussion classes for the Great Books of the Western World are great motivators and Socratic. They are optionally college level with credits, which is slightly more intense.

The Latin course is also recommended and linked to the National Latin Exam

From facebook IEW:

Ladies and Gentlemen, We are pleased to announce that we have opened registration for our fall 2011 online classes for students new to IEW! To get all the exciting details, plus a coupon to register at a discounted price, please go to http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/online.

Since this is a brand new program, we are only offering one class at each level, so space is extremely limited.

updated at 8 pm Tues night:

Quick Update: The Level A (Grades 4-6) is now full. There are a few spots left in both the Level B (Grades 6-8) and Level C (Grades 9+) classes.

self study, self teaching, not quite a true "class" so am not sure it belongs on this list but:

(free of charge)

Khan Academy

http://www.khanacademy.org/

could also help as a supplement to other curriculum or classes

math, science, finance, history

optional free practice exercises online if you open a google email & log in

My son took the Mathematical Logic 1 course through eIMACS. The material, instructor, presentation, response time and explanations -- all superb. We were extremely happy with this course and plan to sign up ds for the second half probably next year.

The Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science site offers courses in

Advanced Mathematical Logic

AP Calculus Preparation

University Computer Science

AP Computer Science

Northwestern U's Gifted Learning Links (GLL) Academic Essay Writing course with Michael Clay Thompson is quite good. I'd recommend it for a middle schooler. MCT is responsive, offers helpful suggestions, and doesn't belabor points. I just wish we had started his series sooner.

http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/gll/

ETA: Regarding Northwestern's GLL courses, I would recommend those that use someone's name -- Michael Clay Thompson or David White, for example. Many of them are just money makers that deliver very little for the high price you pay. You will only know how good a course is by word of mouth. One of my children taught a few of their Saturday Enrichment courses and was given very little instructions or oversight. We actually designed the course using suggestions from the WTM boards. Any parent here could have done this and saved a bundle of money in the process. I'm not saying they're all bad but caveat emptor.

I see that this thread is quite old so I am not sure of the relevance, but we have used both Apologia Academy and Red Wagon. My dd likes Red Wagon much better-ds started at Red Wagon this year and is happy as well. However there are seveal teachers at AA - note that the science courses have been taught at AA by Mr Rosenoff (in the past) of Red Wagon.

Finding the right "fit" for your dc is most important. Some kids respond to teaching styles differently.

We find Mr Rosenoff to have passion and is a good lecturer.

HTH,

Kathy
