SW in IL
Cross-posted from the K-8 board since pre-algebra is often considered junior-high level material... ----- DD (15) is not very strong in math and is still struggling with basic operations (mainly multiplication and division). I'm hoping that he'll come back after the break with a new understanding... You know... That light that just all of a sudden comes on after you've stepped away from something for a while. We still have a few areas to cover before we're ready for the next step... fractions, decimals, percents. We're currently using Basic Math from The Teaching Company for the remedial work and will be using Key To <Fractions, Decimals, Percents> along with Basic Math once we get there. I'm wondering if we'll even need to do pre-algebra before heading into algebra. And, if so, what a good book/program is for pre-algebra. Thanks, Sue
AngieW in Texas
Lial's Basic College Mathematics is the one I keep seeing recommended for pre-algebra. It starts at the very beginning. The first chapter goes all the way back to addition and subtraction with whole numbers.
charlotteb
If you're able to find the classic version of Math-u-See, they have a book called "Advanced Math" which covers fractions, decimals and pre-algebra all in one year. I am using it with my son and it is working great! I very highly recommend it!
hsmamainva
Teaching Textbooks Prealgebra also covers all of the basics. It really helped my oldest son, who also struggled with math. He's now up to the Geometry text and scoring 95-100% on every lesson. I just LOVE Teaching Textbooks!! :)
