Video Text Geometry...All Modules?

Recommended Posts

But I wouldn't consider that a complete Geometry course... it's just all I could get at the time. It laid an excellent foundation for my son, who finished the course using ALEKS.

My son liked VT and did very well with it. I loved it, because I found the explanations both clear and succinct. My daughter, who dislikes math, was able to understand and do pretty well with VT Algebra. She prefers TT, though.

We did modules A and B (purchased A-C). By the middle of module B, my son was not getting it. We switched to Lial's and he's breezing through with the help of Jann in TX.

I kept it in case it works for my younger son. I have to tell you though, once we called for assistance, the gentleman called back after of a couple of hours; however, he did not seem at all happy to help us. He was very matter-of-fact and seemed rushed to get off the phone. Because of this reception, I never called again.

My son loved VT Algebra and Geometry. He was disappointed that their publishing schedule didn't keep up with him, but dh took the list of topics projected for the final geometry module and did a series of homemade lessons.

I think the standards of VT compare favorably with the other courses I looked at, and it was far more doable for this time challenged mom who's forgotten most of her math over the years. The graphic component that I liked in the Algebra course is even more helpful in Geometry. Ds has tested well on the geometry portions of all the standardized tests he took during/after VT geometry. I think the emphasis on lots of proofs helped him cement and apply basic logic. It also helped him write better organized papers in other subjects.

We've had nothing but good customer service experiences, but I do know that Mr. Clark has had all kinds of challenges thrown in the way of his finishing the Geometry course. The last time we spoke he was trying to tape another round of lessons while fighting a chest cold. They went out of their way to keep ds provided with pre-publication geometry modules.

My best recommendation for VT is that it turned my math phobic son around completely. Just as he was finishing the last of the VT geometry pre-publication lessons he enrolled in a college algebra course at the cc. His instructor and a fellow student (a hs mom returning to school) asked which curriculum he'd used because he did such an outstanding job of explaining how to solve different types of problems. [Giving explanations to the class of how to solve problems was one of the course requirements.]

Thanks Martha! We found the same thing to be true with Firebaugh's Math Relief: Algebra I and II. DS did VERY well on the Algebra portion of the ACT, AND can explain Algebra all day long....in other words, he gets it.

But Firebaugh has not completed his Geometry section, and I was looking for a Geometry course, that would be DVD in nature, and cover things as well as Firebaugh did with Algebra. So, that the child will KNOW geometry. That is my goal. Not necessarily looking for the most rigorous course out there. That is not my goal. I want them to understand the subject matter.

Thank you SO much for the information.

Blessings this Christmas season!

Why did your daughter prefer TT to VT, if I may ask?

It's a completely different setting. She did VT Algebra at home, but TT Geometry is in a class with other homeschoolers. The difference may just be the motivation of a different teacher and other students.

Frankly, she's not very motivated (read 'lazy') and doesn't seem to like much of anything about school anymore. That's why she's in a co-op. She won't work very hard just for me anymore :glare:

I'm a huge fan of VT. We tried Chalkdust for Precalculus this year, and I was almost not sorry when my (cheaply acquired) discs didn't work. He is a good lecturer, but 45-55 minute lectures felt like a huge waste of time. VT is short and to the point!

That was exactly one of the reasons that we liked Firebaugh's Math Relief...The whole lesson, including the video portion, took about an hour, give or take a few minutes. It was just what we had alloted for our math at 8th and 9th grades.

So, I was looking for something for geometry that didn't have a 45 minutes lecture AND THEN an hour more of problems.

We needed something more of "short sweet and to the point."

Thanks Grace, that was just what we needed!

Blessings,
