Caitilin
I was listening to an NPR story last night about women's clothing styles in Iraq, and the reporter used the terms hijab (sp?) and abaya. Is hijab a specific garment, or a style of dressing? I am pretty sure that I am correct in understanding that an abaya is a particular piece of clothing, but I couldn't tell about hijab from the way the reporter was using the word. Can someone help me out? Thanks! PS--PLEASE, no discussion of whether the clothing is appropriate--I am only seeking term clarification. Thanks! sleepymommy
Abaya is the "cloak" or body covering. Hijab is a common reference to the head covering, but can also be used as just a general description of Islamic dressing.
