Laurie4b
Do any of you know of a good site where a student can look for career paths that use his strengths (and avoid weaknesses) ?

choirfarm
Sonlight has a course that I highly recommend. My son did it as an 8th grader in a semester and it was FABULOUS. I guess you could just get the books, but I did find the course IG helpful. It had all sorts of questionaires to fill out and then once you found out your gifts you explored careers. We had a blast one day exploring some website where you looked at different careers, what each one made, how much school you needed, etc. Here is a link to the course: http://www.sonlight.com/580-00.html I didn't think 63 bucks was bad for a semester course. MBM
Funny you should ask this. Just yesterday, I received a pamphlet from my son's school (we afterschool) about a program in the Chicago area to help kids shape their future. It's called Youth Futures. Here's the link to the self-assessment tests: http://www.youthfuturesmetro.com/assessment.asp I have not looked through this thoroughly, so I don't know how good it is. ***** The Sonlight course looks interesting. I think I might look into that, too. Thanks, Christine.
Miss Marple
http://www.careerdirectonline.org/?aid=SCCARPLAN This is from Larry Burkett's site, Crown Ministries. I used it with my oldest son at the beginning of his senior year. I think it cost about $80 and takes about an hour to complete.
Lori D.
Yes, I *highly* recommend paying for either a good online test/interpretation, or a visit to a career counselor to help you test/interpret the test. Most online tests run anywhere between $60-100; two sessions with a career counselor (1 session for the test, the other for the interpretation) would probably be more, but it is an investment that will help your student for their entire life, and it is WAY worth it!! I was 25yo when I went through these 2 tests with a career counselor, and it was some of the best educational money I EVER spent!! We will definitely be paying to have our DSs go thru some career counseling tests in the next 2-3 years. I suggest getting both types of tests. The personality test will help your student understand how they relate best with others, and also to understand how other personality types work -- all of which adds up to "getting along" at work (and home!) a lot better. An interest survey helps your student see the ways in which he/she works best (i.e.: alone or with others; using hands or mind; regular or irregular hours; like working with tech or machinery, or not; motivated most by money, self expression, helping others, etc.). Once you understand these things about yourself, it REALLY helps you look at ANY job and see whether you will connect (i.e., really get to use YOUR strengths and interests) with that job. The Crown Ministries already mentioned is a Christian service. If you prefer secular, you can try a google search for a career assessment website, but also check out your local University or Community College careers office -- they very well may offer in-person career counseling for a low fee! Here's a helpful overview article on figuring out a career from About.com: http://careerplanning.about.com/od/selfassessment/a/self_assessment.htm And the information on the bottom half of this webpage is a very helpful explanation of two specific interest surveys: http://psychcorp.pearsonassessments.com/HAIWEB/Cultures/en-us/Productdetail.htm?Pid=PAg115 We're just starting to explore our options with doing some career testing for our older DS (11th grade). Fun! BEST of luck in your career assessment adventures! Warmest regards, Lori D. Edited December 10, 2009 by Lori D. added info
