Kendall Posted March 17, 2008 Share Posted March 17, 2008 My son, who will be in 11th next year, wants to study New Testament Greek. What are the options for self study? I've kept up in Latin with him for 3 years, but I will not have the time this year to do Greek. We do have a few people that he can go to for help. What would you suggest? I use it for exegesis. I learned Greek in college for three quarters. I found it easier than Latin. It would take some kind of motivated kid to stick with it, though, without some kind of deadlines and prompts. One of my sons is trying to teach himself Japanese and I just can't bring myself to learn it along with him, so he's progressing very, very slowly. His motivation is to go to Japan on exchange, but that isn't really enough to keep him going in the day-to-day. I googled biblical+greek+course+school and came up with some interesting options. It looks like there are classes out there, but I can't tell how good they are. Greek takes so much time to memorize, I think this would be a good subject to do with a tutor's help once a week. My boys are just about to finish up the 3rd volume of the Elementary Greek series. Next school year my DH is going to move them into Machen's New Testament Greek for Beginners and use the corresponding workbook found at Amazon. Jenn in CA Posted March 17, 2008 Share Posted March 17, 2008 We're using Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. Great for self-study which is what my boys are doing. You can buy a workbook and from Mounce's website, you can download the answers to the workbook. He even has quizzes at the website (no answers for those) and some short lectures that can supplement the book, I believe. And, a computer flashcard quizzing program to download. All this extra stuff is free. This text is very doable, esp. if you've already had Latin. Oh, and about self-study, I'm even having them grade their own work, in order for them to see the correct translations for themselves. And as to what to buy, you should buy the textbook and the workbook. BTW this book is designed to be completed by seminary students in one year. It covers pretty much all grammar and several hundred of the most common NT vocab. Dh is continuing with Mounce with a local pastor. I want to try this: Online classes, including 10 week Greek alphabet course, Greek grammar, etc. $20/course/family. The Greek that SO offers is Attic Greek and so is not geared specifically towards Biblical Greek, but Attic Greek is the more complex form. Ds has not learned any Bible-specific vocab, but if he were also working through a Biblical Greek text to help with Bible-specific vocab, he would be amazing with Biblical Greek! -- . The class is scheduled twice a week for 1 hour and 30 minutes each. Yes, it's online and adults can take their courses. It took me forever just to learn the alphabet. :) Oldest ds (at home) did Vol. I of Bluedorn's Greek and said he liked the Mounce program better.
