lovinmomma
Okay, so I'm a mother that deals with ADD. So, when it comes to self-educating I need engaging materials. It's hard for me to read dry books, and a lot of non-fiction seems very dry to me. Story form fiction is very easy for me. I also had a HORRIBLE education from about 6th grade and up. So, I really don't have much education past 5th grade. Having said that, I'm a numbers person and pick up math really easily. I DID get a very good elementary education....I just don't remember most of it. :001_huh: So, I need some help to figure out where to start. These are my ideas. Remember, that I don't have a ton of time. I have 3 small children. I'm also not opposed to just learning alongside them. Here are my thoughts: Math: Probably don't need to worry about this, yet. I should be able to understand the concepts for the first 5 or so years. We are using RS, so if I don't remember something RS should teach me well. Spelling: We are using SWR, so I thought that I would just stay about 6 months ahead of my children in my own learning log. Grammar: I think that I need some help here, because I don't remember much. I'm sure that it would all come back to my memory. I do need a refresher, though. Foreign Language: We are moving to East Africa, so I thought that I would probably just focus on language study in-country for now. However, I have considered trying to do some latin. History: I need a lot of help here. Uhhh.... was I even taught history? My children will be using SOTW once they reach 1st grade, so I was considering reading through MOH so that I could impart that information into their studies with SOTW. Any ideas? I love the idea of using SWB's book The History of the Ancient World, but I'm not sure that I could handle the reading. Science: Learn along with them? We are using Sonlight and possibly NOEO. Science is my favorite subject. Anyways, I'm a little bit overwhelmed. Let me know what you all think.
Cedarmom
History: is SWB's book on CD. If you listen to it on CD, you can accomplish other things while you listen. You could also do this with some other great boos or historical fiction (many suggestions in WTM) Grammar: I like Analytical Grammar. It is a one year program. You could do it in probably 10-20 minutes a day.
Christy B
Oh, I can so relate. No kidding, in the last fifteen minutes my dh mentioned that I remind him very much of a squirrel. I was here, on fb, checking the weather, chatting with a friend, and burning his chicken (which I totally forgot I had even put on to cook). Now, I LOVE to read, was working on a lit major in college, and heavy/deep books don't scare me -- but I'm finding that the older I get the more I struggle to stay focused. I have thoroughly enjoyed the SOTW books on CDrom -- I learned so much (sad, but true). MOH is wonderful and I believe it is available on audio as well. Again, I love to read but I just don't have the time or focus to sit down and work through a text right now. I also LOVE the Drive Through History DVDs. (All of those, except for SOTW, have a Christian point of view, if that is either a plus or negative for you, just fyi.) I can't help you with Latin, or science. Grammar -- well, as much as I love grammar, I can't say that anything comes to mind that is especially engaging! But hopefully some folks will have some recommendations. Sonlight Grammar Ace, perhaps? Or Cozy Grammar?
