Haiku
I am getting ready to purchase LfC A for my daughter to use next year (3rd grade). I want to have some time to preview it, as I have never studied Latin before. I was wondering whether it is worth it to go ahead and buy the mastery bundle, which includes the activity book and the history reader, or whether the basic bundle is adequate. kckamy
We purchased the mastery bundle for LfC Primer A but did not end up using the history reader or the activity book. There are some that love the activity book, but we stopped using it after the first 7 or 8 lessons. I felt it was "busy" work that was not adding to our learning. I just purchased a Latin grammar workbook that goes nicely along with LfC. We are using it along with LfC B but if I would have known about it last year we would have started it about half way through LfC A. http://www.bookdepository.com/search?searchTerm=latin+practice+exercises+level+1+&search=search There are 3 levels available. Most of the vocabulary in level 1 is covered in LfC A which makes it very compatible.
NoPlaceLikeHome
Do you think that Latin for Children covers English grammar thoroughly or is it meant to be used with Shurley English? My ds uses K12 Language Arts which seems to be pretty thorough, but it is only the 2nd grade level and there I suspect the grammar will not get meatier till older grades. Also what do you think of LFC compared to Lively Latin? Does LFC give more instruction in grammar in terms that a student can easily understand? I do not mean to hijack and appreciate any info:)
Faithr
We are using LfC A. We just use the workbook and dvd lectures. I am pretty relaxed about grammar in the early years so to me it is a fine exposure to grammar. I can't compare with Lively Latin, though. Verity
We use LfC A, I think that the workbook and dvd's are musts, the activity book is useful for additional practice if you don't have another resource (we use it but don't do it all). I haven't gotten to the lesson with the history reader yet but I'm excited about using that - one of my goals is for my student (and myself!) to be able to read latin sentences. We are doing one lesson per week so having the activity book allows us some extra exercises to do each day along with the chanting. Practice! :)
Narrow Gate Academy
We use the whole bundle here. I would consider the DVDs and Primer to be the core of the program. The activity book is a fun way to get extra practice. It has a good variety of crosswords, mazes, matching exercises, etc. I like the translation practice available in the history reader. It's more difficult than the translations in the primer, so DD and I generally work on it together. HTH
Heather in WI
The basic bundle is more than adequate. :-) We did the mastery bundle for A, but dropped the activity book and the readers for B and C. They're nice, but I just didn't want to be doing Latin for that long each day. My son has done very well with B and C, with only the basic bundle. He loves Latin. :-) I have no Latin background either.
Ali in OR
We had everything except the activity book for A. For LFC B I got everything. We have not used the Activity Book much--just no time. And this kid is not into puzzles, mazes, etc. For LFC C we'll go back to everything except the activity book. I do like the Libellus so we get some translation practice. It would be too difficult for dd alone--we do it together. And we get stuck and have to look up the answers on the computer, but I think we're learning something from it! Woodland_Mom
We like the activity book, but some of the activities are pretty advanced for a 3rd grader. We use it more during the review weeks and it was fun resource to have during the summer for Latin review. We didn't use the reader at all in 3rd grade. You'll certainly be able to get a good idea about whether or not you like LFC by purchasing the basic bundle. If you feel you're missing a little "umph" buy the activity book later. HTH I completely agree with this poster on all points. :iagree: Dd enjoys the activity book immensely, as it reinforces what she is learning in the lesson. It adds a lot of fun to the week too, which is one of the reasons that we find LFC to be a good fit. If it weren't for the fun aspects of the program, I don't think my dd would be doing as well as she is with it. Blessings, Lucinda
