How would I translate these community college credits?

Recommended Posts

I'm working on my son's transcript, and am confused about credits. The CC he attends is on a quarter system. On his transcript from there, each course is listed as 5 credits. So, for instance, last year he took three quarters of German and earned 15 credits. How would I list that on his HS transcript?

Public school students here take six courses at the high school, but would only take three courses at the CC, in the Running Start program, which my son is in. So would each CC course be worth 2 "normal" credits?

I hope this makes sense. I don't even know what terms to use in asking this.

Thanks!

Quarters are tricky. :-/

No, you don't put 15 credits on his HS transcript.

When the c.c. does semester courses, 1 semester is equal to a whole year of a high school course, regardless of how many credits the c.c. gives. (Some states give 1 credit per year per course for HS, some give 2, some, like Calif, give 10. Use whatever is common in your state.) So, I'm thinking that since two quarters equal 1 semester, then 3 quarters would be 1.5 credits (or a year and a half of high school credit, whatever that is in your state).

Since you mention Running Start, I assume you are in Washington state. At our state's high schools, Running Start students receive one high school credit for each 5-credit one-quarter course at the cc. The colleges in our state, and surrounding states, are used to this convention, so I would advise that you follow it for clarity. I also advise that you indicate on your transcript that those credits were earned at the cc. I can send you a sample transcript if you'd like. If so, PM me your e-mail address.

Thanks, everyone.

Janet, I PMed you. Yes, I live in Washington.

This frantic dash to get transcript materials together is reminding me of the year that I was sewing my son's Halloween costume at a church Harvest Party, on Halloween day. One of the older ladies at the church said, "Let me give you a little heads-up. Halloween happens on the same day every year." Nothing like waiting until the 11th hour to get your act together. Gah!

LOL! I'm dashing out the door right now, but I'll send the sample this afternoon. Hope that's quick enough!
